100 YEARS AGO April 30, 1918
WALNUT RIDGE — Four men from Mammoth Spring, Ark., and Thayer, Mo., all disciples of Pastor Russell, were beaten, tarred and feathered and literally “run” out of town tonight. A woman companion of the four men was given a sound lecture and allowed to depart. The four men gave their names as W.R. Duncan, E.J. French, Charles Franke and G.B. Griffen. The woman is Mrs. R.L. Van Dossen of Thayer, Mo. The five were arrested by sheriff J.C. Hall Sunday for distributing literature which the sheriff considered seditious.

The state’s financial condition is even worse than fiscal officials imagined a few weeks ago, but the present level of services, with one exception, can be managed the rest of this biennium without tax legislation. Clarence E. (Mike) Frost, consultant to the state Administration Department, conveyed this message Monday in an appearance before the Arkansas Legislative Council and in an interview. The exception is the state Penitentiary. The prison system, which is not financed from general tax revenues, needs about $1.75 million for the rest of the biennium.

Former Pulaski County sheriff’s deputy Ken Dillon was sentenced Thursday to 21 years in prison after being convicted of raping a Jacksonville woman in his patrol car Oct. 10, 1990. Circuit Judge John Plegge imposed the sentence after a six-man, six-woman jury deliberated 1¾ hours before convicting Dillon of the crime. He faced a maximum sentence of life in prison. The verdict marked the second time Dillon, 37, of Mayflower (Faulkner County) was found guilty of the rape.

A Jacksonville man who is accused of impersonating a deputy U.S. marshal has been banging on people’s doors demanding information and tried to have blue lights and a police radio installed in his truck, witnesses testified Tuesday at a detention hearing. The hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Ray followed the arrest Saturday of Jonathan Horton, 33. Horton, arrested on a warrant, has been known to wear a badge around his neck and drives a black pickup with a sign in the back window that reads “U.S. Fugitive Task Force K-9 Unit,” a nonexistent entity.
