100 YEARS AGO May 1, 1918

FORT SMITH — Charged with violating the espionage act, C. W. Lunsford of this city was today held to the United Stated Grand Jury in $500 bond. Lunsford, according to federal officials, admitted that he was responsibl­e for the distributi­on here a week ago of the “Kingdom News,” a Russellite publicatio­n that is alleged to have attacked the government for suppressin­g “The Finished Mystery.” Both the “Kingdom News” and “The Finished Mystery” have been classed as seditious by the Department of Justice, which has ordered them suppressed.

50 YEARS AGO May 1, 1968

ROGERS — A policeman sued the city of Rogers Tuesday for back payment for work he has done on legal state holidays during the last six years. Robert Lee Deason, now on a sixmonth leave of absence, said $1,212 was due him. Deason has been employed by the Rogers Police Department since May 1962. He said in his suit that the city should pay him holiday pay for the 13 Arkansas legal holidays during each of the six years. The suit was filed in Benton County Circuit Court.

JONESBORO — A group of physically disabled students who attend Arkansas State University held a news conference Thursday to say that officials aren’t doing enough to tend to their needs. Karen Lewellen, a spokesman for Disabled Students of ASU, said the university is not meeting the criteria of the federal Americans with Disabiliti­es Act, which took effect last year. The group claims the university library doesn’t have the right equipment for visually impaired students, there are few wheelchair desks and wheelchair accessible restrooms, and parking is inadequate for the disabled.

10 YEARS AGO May 1, 2008

PINE BLUFF — A jury convicted a Pine Bluff man Wednesday of killing one person and injuring two others in an August shootout in the parking lot of Three Gables Nightclub. The Jefferson County jury found Brandon Roberts, 21, guilty of murder in the second degree in the death of Marquis Borders and guilty of two counts of battery in the third degree in the wounding of Carla Mixon and Danny Sessions in the shootout. Circuit Judge Berlin Jones imposed the jury’s recommende­d sentence of 12 years in the Department of Correction on the murder count and fines of $1,000 for each of the battery counts.
