Rogers 5K to stress relevance of hydration

- CHARLI WILLIAMS Please send tips for active recreation events to charlette.williams @arkansasonline.com

Hydration is as important as staying active … even on the coolest days. Saturday, the Hydration Celebration 5K will take place in Rogers, beginning at 7:30 a.m. with an out-and-back 5K walk and run around Pinnacle Hills Promenade, 2203 S. Promenade Blvd.

Following the 5K, a 50yard Toddler Trot will begin at 8:45 a.m., with a Youth Run not far behind. Starting about 9 a.m. the Youth Run has two divisions: Kindergartners up to third-graders will run a half-mile, and fourthto eighth-graders will run a mile. Parents are allowed to run along, too, for $20.

Fees for the 5K are $35 for runners 19 and older, $25 for ages 18 and under. All adult fees will increase by $5 Friday. Youth Runs are free but a $10 donation would be welcome. The Toddler Run costs $15.

Day-of-race registration for the 5K begins at 6:30 a.m. at the Pinnacle Hills Promenade; the Toddler Trot and Youth Run registration will open at 7:45 a.m.

Between 3 and 7 p.m. Friday, on-site registration will be available where runners can pick up race bibs, timing chips, goodie bags and T-shirts.

All 5K finishers will receive a medal; and there are awards for age division and overall finishers. The Youth Run is noncompetitive, all finishers will receive a blue ribbon and goodie bag at the finish line.

In 1995, Kendrick Fincher, a very active teenager, died from heat stroke complications during football practice. His family wanted to promote the importance of hydration and to educate the community on heat illness, while getting Arkansans outdoors, active and hydrated.
