–––––❖––––– HUGH F. BURNETT A box of Parodi cigars, a fifth of single malt scotch, and a flight of unsuspecting ducks welcomed Dr. Hugh F. Burnett II to heaven on May 14, 2018. He took his final breath at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, his “home away from home” for the last 42 years. He loved the hospital and all those who worked in it.

Hugh was born August 3, 1942 in Shawnee, Okla,. to Hugh Franklin Burnett and Selma Hull Burnett. Hugh’s father was a World War II bomber pilot who was shot down over Belgium after ordering his crew to parachute. Sadly he did not survive, but Hugh’s father remains a hero in our family. Selma remarried to Herbert L. Wineland, M.D. in 1945, and from that union Hugh was blessed with six siblings who always looked up to their big brother.

Hugh grew up in Gunnison, Colo., and Nashville, Tenn., while his second father finished his education. The family moved to Pine Bluff in 1955, where Hugh graduated from high school. He attended both Christian Brothers and Tulane University, graduating in 1963. In graduate school he worked towards a master’s degree in zoology. The University of Arkansas School of Medicine occupied his next four years.

In 1969 he married Sally Roberta Trammell from De Queen. Their first son, Hugh Franklin Burnett III, was born later that year, followed by Thomas Wilson Burnett in 1973. Medical school led to residencies in general and cardiothoracic surgery also at UAMS. Although Hugh specialized in lung and esophageal surgery, he retained his cardiothoracic board standing throughout his career. His professional affiliations are too numerous to list.

Hugh joined The Surgical Clinic in 1976 with Grimsley Graham, M.D. A short time later, Everett Tucker, M.D. joined the two to create an incredible triad of surgeons. The Surgical Clinic grew immensely over the years with too many fine surgeons to name. The clinic paralleled the rise of the Higginbotham Surgery Center on the Baptist campus.

Hugh was a teacher despite his non-academic career path. He educated hundreds of nurses, physicians, and hospital staffs throughout his 40-year surgical span. Calm as any under pressure and with an unbreakable shell, Hugh was a teddy bear on the inside. His emotions were deep but he could always keep them in check. Almost always.

What little free time Hugh had was devoted to his wife, his two sons, and his five granddaughters. He rarely traveled unless there was a medical meeting, gun show, shooting competition, or hunt at the other end of the journey. He never joined a country club or played golf. His time was spent with his family. Every Sunday night at Hugh and Sally’s home was “girls night”. They adore their Paw and Sassy.

Ducks, fishing, and guns were a large part of Hugh’s life away from the hospital, always with the boys. Hugh, Charles Sullivan, M.D., Whit Hall, M.D., and Jerry Carman acquired the Miracle Mallard Duck Club in 1983, and legendary family weekends were born. Duck club pictures always came with wide smiles, yet Hugh rarely shot!

Hugh’s third family consisted of his Benton Gun Club brothers—Dr. Sullivan, Neil Compton, Harold Smith, Greg Sullivan, Mason Sickle, Larry Reynolds, Bill Duncan, Alston Jennings, Leroy Squires, and Rich Richards. Yearly matches in Louisiana, Texas, and of course, Saline County were a staple for the last 25 years. These guys were always up for guns and grilling.

Nobody knew Hugh better than his loving and beautiful wife Sally. She did it all at home, and still does. She endured the call nights when Hugh was gone all night, the many nights when he arrived home at insanely late hours, and the phone ringing all night when he was on call. Just under 50 years of cooking, cleaning, kids, grandkids, and unconditional support and love! Hugh was blessed to have found the perfect wife and mother.

Hugh was predeceased by his father Hugh, his mother, his second father, and his beloved great aunt, Nell Sakach (Nene). He is survived by his wife Sally; his sons Hugh Franklin III (Lin) and Thomas Wilson; their wives Suzanne and Jennifer, and five granddaughters, Haley, Hope, Rebecca, Brette, and Sydney. He

is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Lee Wineland, M.D. (Pam), Pam Willis (Maurice), Daria Wineland (John Porton), Teresa Wineland, Vicki Perry (Jim), and Greg Wineland (Angela); 14 nieces and nephews, nine great-nieces and nephews, and his brother-in-law Bob Trammell.

A special thank you to Stephen Hutchins, M.D., Derlis Martino, M.D. and John Ransom, M.D. for their sacrifice of time and expertise. We can’t thank you enough for your heroic efforts. Thanks also to Drs. Nancy Rector, Keerthy Narisetty, Eyad Abochale, and Shane Kimball. The nursing staff in the CVICU was exemplary. Thank you, Rebecca, and all those who cared for him.

Donations can be made to Ducks Unlimited or the Humane Society of Pulaski County. To sign the online guestbook, go to www.griffinleggetthealeyroth. com.

–––––❖––––– EMILY JANE GOLDEN, beloved daughter of Kimberly and William Golden and sister of Abbie Golden Winston, has died after a long illness. Emily was born in Little Rock on October 3, 1985. Despite her multiple disabilities and physical limitations, Emily lived a joyous life at the center of her family. She was the heart of a community of loving, caring individuals whose lives and careers brought us together. In her unique way she had a special private relationship with everyone who loved and cared for her. Emily had a wicked sense of humor and a stubborn streak that is legendary among therapists. She was a trailblazer in the Little Rock School District as the first child to use a computerized communication device in a regular classroom at Chicot Elementary School from which she graduated in the regular 6th grade. She adored her family, birthday parties, Christmas presents, and Fourth of July celebrations. Emily was proud and protective of her little sister; she made it her job to protest loudly if a young Abbie needed a little parental discipline.

Music, game shows, Food Network, QVC shopping, and books on tape filled her life. She was a country music fan (the good old kind) and loved to watch her favorite performers on The Grand Ole Opry show. Emily was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. More recently she enjoyed watching the Pulaski Heights Methodist Church services on Sunday morning with her nurse.

In addition to her parents and sister she is survived by her new brother-in-law Blake Winston of Charlotte, N.C.; uncles and aunts Marianne and Mike Johnson of Greensboro, N.C., and Karen and Jim Goldthwaite of Fort Worth, Texas; cousins Chris Goldthwaite of Fort Worth, Tyler Goldthwaite of Dallas, and Brad Johnson of Gaffney, S.C.; and step-grandmother Ann Howard Golden of New York and Williamsburg, Va. She leaves her longtime beloved caregiver Mary Ashby and many other loving special people who provided care and companionship.

Emily had a spirit and will to live despite enduring challenges that would have broken most of us. She was a joy and an inspiration, a shining gift to her family, friends, and caregivers. We will celebrate her life with a service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Friday, May 25 at 10 AM followed by interment in the St. Mark’s Columbarium. We invite all of our friends, colleagues, and Emily’s caregivers to join us at home for a buffet lunch and reception following the service.

We would like to especially thank UAMS physicians Drs. Robert Hopkins, Sara Harrington, Jennifer Casey, and retired professor Dr. Robert Warren for the loving care and support that made Emily’s journey possible. We also would like to extend our profound gratitude for the many teachers, therapists, and caregivers from Easter Seals, Pathfinder, Little Rock Public Schools, and Care Network and Care IV who gave Emily and her family so much loving care and support. May Emily dance in heaven with her special speech therapist, Jill McIlroy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Emily’s honor may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1000 N Mississippi St, Little Rock, Ark., 72207 or Heifer International, ATTN: Donor Services, Heifer International, 1 World Ave., Little Rock, Ark., 72202, or the charity of your choice. –––––❖––––– NORMA NADINE PAUL (OBERLAG) KNEELAND, age 97 of North Little Rock, passed away

May 10, 2018.

Born March 20,

1921, daughter of Addison and

Lillian Paul of

Levy, North Little Rock. She was a retired

Civil Service administrator, distinguishing herself as the director of the 2nd

Air Force Headquarters Incentive Awards Program after serving as the Executive Secretary to the Base Commander of Barksdale Air Force Base, La.

A 1937 graduate of North Little Rock High School, she was a professional working woman and mother during and after World War Two in an era when this was unusual. Having lived the nomadic life of a military wife in the Army Air Corps and US Air Force, she held many jobs to help support her young family. Her three sons were born on Military Bases in Temple, Texas, Aberdeen, Md., and Shreveport, La. She worked on Top Secret efforts for classified weapons at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds and was at one point a 2½ ton “Jimmy” truck driver transporting German Prisoners of War at Camp Phillips, Kan., detention camp and in Shreveport she owned and operated “Door 13 Bar & Lounge”. Following the retirement of her husband from the Air Force, the family moved from Shreveport back to North Little Rock where she decided to practice an earlier training as a Cosmetologist by owning and operating The Flair Beauty Salon in Jacksonville, Ark. She somehow found time to be a Cub Scout Den Mother leading hikes into the wilds of the forest around Lakewood! And late in life, she even took courses at Little Rock University as her way of encouraging her sons to attend college.

Having grown up during the Great Depression and knowing economic hardship, she was never-the-less always caring, optimistic and fun loving — a trait she attributes to her own mother who dealt with depression economics by driving into the Arkansas backwoods where she would buy bootleg White Lightning to resell in half-pint bottles to the railroad workers coming home in her neighborhood in Levy.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Ken Oberlag and Maurice Kneeland as well as her brothers, Earl Paul, Hurschel Paul, Alfred Paul and her

daughters-in-law Gail Oberlag and Becky Oberlag.

She is survived by her three sons, Ron Oberlag, of North Little Rock, Ark.; Randy (Jamie) Oberlag of Chickasha, Okla.; and Reginald (Alice) Oberlag of New York City, N.Y.; as well as step-son Glenn (Lily) Kneeland of Rossville, Tenn., and step-daughter-in-law Jeannine Kneeland of Vermont.

She is also survived by three grandchildren: Jason (Angela) Oberlag, of Fayetteville, Ark.; Jennifer (Jamie) Osberg of Wayzata, Minn.; and R. Kevin Oberlag of Austin, Texas, as well as six step-grandchildren: Glen Kneeland, Anita Kneeland Dismukes, Don Borin, Becki Hooten, Jake Glenn, and Erin Cochran.

Norma’s heart was big enough to hold the love for two additional former daughters-in-law, Gay (Bill) Miller and Kaye (Mike) McLeod, and also for 17 great-grand kids and eight great-great-grand kids!

Norma Kneeland’s family mailing address is 4103 Lochridge Road, North Little Rock, Ark., 72116. Memorials are requested in lieu of flowers and may be made to CARTI Foundation, P.O. Box 55011, Little Rock Ark., 72215; to the Trojan Athletic Foundation, 2801 South University Ave., Jack Stephens Center, Little Rock, Ark., 72204; or to a charity of your choice.

–––––❖––––– BUTLERVILLE — Jerry C. Baldwin, 70, of Butlerville, passed away May 18, 2018, peacefully in his home.

He was born July

30, 1947 in Searcy, Ark., to the late JB Baldwin and Mattie Lene

Harris Baldwin

Knox. He was the oldest of 6 siblings and became the man of the house at the tender age of 9. From a young age he was tinkering and creating. Extremely imaginative, he could create anything from practically nothing. This started his love of cars, motorcycles and airplanes.

Jerry could fix nearly anything and loved working with his hands including: Metalwork, fiberglass, engines, electrical, and in later years gardening and yard work. His fascination with taking things apart and learning the inner workings started at a young age. He was building engines from the time he was 13-14. His determination, drive, inquisitive nature, persistence, perseverance, and love for learning new things set the tone for how he spent his life.

He started learning how to fly at the age of 18. A love he would continue the rest of his life and share with his family and girls. In 19661967, he went to Illinois & Michigan and worked on a pipeline and learned to operate big machinery. In 1969, Jerry decided to open up Baldwin Garage located in Doyle Williams garage at Old Austin. Forrest and Doyle Williams’ influence remained with him for years in his love of antique cars and old tractors and naming his only son after Doyle. He also had a tremendous respect and wonderful friendship with Dude Spence and Charlie Armstrong, who he loved greatly. In 1972, Jerry bought the Gulf Station, a year later he opened the new Baldwin Garage on Hwy 367 S specializing in VW’s and later building trailers for Apollo boats and ICM also known as “Panther Trailer’s”. Jerry started in 1984 a satellite business and at the time was the 4th largest in the country as Baldwin/Odom. In the background, he had a fiberglass business that made Add-a-Cab sleeper campers from 1979-2008 as Cabot Industries. In 1994 he started repairing molds for housing industry and decided to venture into the cultured marble business. He has been in the Bath and Kitchen industry since as Marble Creations.

Jerry had a quick wit and comeback or saying for anything.

He loved his dogs, family, and friends and not always in that order.

He was stubborn, proud, good hearted, and generous.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, his son Doyle Wayne Baldwin and his mother in law, Frances Evelyn Roberts, sister in law Paula Baldwin and brother in law Donald Roberts. He is survived by his wife Phyllis Roberts Baldwin, his daughters Kyla Baldwin, Kasi (Matt) Baldwin-Ellis, Gheea (Nick) Whitaker, Stephanie (Jake) Smith; 3 brothers, Lynn (Linda) Baldwin, Sam Baldwin, Dennis (Brenda) Baldwin; 2 sisters, Jean Holmes, Sharon Welkey, 3 half brothers, Rick, Jamie, Joe; grand children Mattie Keirsten Ellis, Gavin and Ethan Whitaker, Emory and Isabella Smith; numerous family and friends.

Jerry was loved and respected by many and he will be greatly missed by all.

–––––❖––––– ROGERS — Willie Mae Nemec, 86, passed away May 16, 2018, at Jamestown Nursing and Rehab in

Rogers. She was born on March

29, 1932, in Antioch, Ark., to Orville and Pauline (Pickard) Thompson.

Willie was raised on a farm and in nearby

Beebe, Ark. She worked as a catering assistant, legal secretary, executive assistant, restaurant manager, rental property supervisor, postmistress, timeshare coordinator and the best Mom her children Denise “Nese,” Jason (Brenda), and Micah (Melinda) could have ever hoped for. She was mostly a Presbyterian and lived most of her life in Arkansas including Newport, West Memphis, Hazen, Brinkley, Little Rock, Horseshoe Bend, Holiday island, Eureka Springs, Fayetteville, and Rogers, with a brief stay in Lubbock, Texas, where she and then-husband Joseph Charles Nemec Jr. (1927-1986) discovered they were expecting their first child. She made lifelong friends at every stop along the way while also keeping in touch with family near and far, and many of these received birthday cards from her each year.

A lifelong Democrat, she was active in local and state politics, as her several photos with Bill Clinton prove. She was the first woman elected justice of the peace in Izard County, and she was a member of state-level political conventions. She continued her involvement in politics in Carroll and Washington counties. Her many other roles included being a certified EMT, funeral home monitor, church secretary and treasurer, CASA caseworker, and Eureka Springs Rotary Club officer, serving in almost all possible office and board positions during her years. Rotary named her a Paul Harris Fellow in 2005.

She spent most of her retired years doing volunteer work with food banks in Eureka Springs and Fayetteville, at the ICU desk in Washington Regional Medical Center, and with the Botanical Gardens of the Ozarks where she organized bulk mailings and greeted visitors on Sunday mornings, receiving a 100 + volunteer hours award for her work in 2017. People knew if they wanted something done, they needed to go to Willie. No grass grew under her feet.

She was a plant lover, crossword puzzle worker, Scrabble player extraordinaire, prolific reader, and journalist who wrote news and feature pieces for several weekly newspapers, including the Horseshoe Progress and the Holiday

Islander. Her Islander column Willie’s World highlighted her humor and insights into human nature and chronicled her own and others exploits, including those of her children and grandchildren. She loved to cross-stitch, and won the “Best in Show” ribbon with one of her creations at the Washington County Fair.

Some would argue that Willie’s charm, quick wit, logic, and ability to get things done contributed mightily to the early success of Dick and Bill Pratt’s resort-retirement village Horseshoe Bend Estates in Izard County, which is where she began her long career in the tourism industry.

Willie’s family sincerely thanks the kind, careful caregivers at Mt. Carmel Community assisted living and at Jamestown Nursing & Rehab, Rogers, Ark.

Willie was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Margaret Phillips. She is survived by her three children; two brothers: Bob (Barbara) Thompson, Upland, Calif., and Hays (Julia) Thompson, Cabot; six grandchildren: Zane, Fayetteville; Cedar (Jared), Springdale; Katie (Michael), Minneapolis, Minn.; Scott (Liana) and Jenny (Jordan), Rogers; and Mahala, West Plains, Mo., one step-grandson James (Daisy), Honey Grove, Texas; and 11 great-grandchildren: Linden, Rose, Sophia, Luna, Francis, Violet, Joy Mae, Lucian, Margot, Hudson, and Demitri, with two more on the way. Willie is also survived by many delightful friends and extended family.

Willie was cremated at her express wish. A memorial service is set for 1p.m., Friday, May 25, at Nelson-Berna Funeral & Crematory, 4520 N. Crossover Road, Fayetteville, Ark., 72703.
