Manna from heaven?

-

Maybe the rejection of climate science as national policy can be explained biblically/metaphorically.

I was raised Southern Baptist and worshiped as one for many years. But I was never one whose faith was so fragile that I feared it could be damaged by admitting the truth of evolution or the validity of any scientific research that challenged biblical “truths.”

My quote marks are meant to suggest that some such truths are not necessarily facts, but are reflections— speculation, even—on the nature of God and humans and our relationships with each other. Pinning them down as literal facts strips them of their power.

I believe the GOP is now controlled by politicians who cater to what I consider the fetid core of the right-wing base. That core includes those of fragile faith who thus reject evolution and climate science.

So the metaphor that may be worth considering is to compare fossil fuels to manna from heaven. Fossil fuels require a bit more effort than did manna, but they are similar, although fossil fuels come from the wrong direction. I am not suggesting that fossil fuels come from hell. Heaven forbid! But one could go there if one were so inclined.

So, anything that disrespects God’s gift of “manna” from wells and mines is un-biblical? Including graven images that “seem” to worship wind and sunshine? Maybe. Though wind and sunshine seem more directly from God.

I don’t pretend to understand how those people think.
