100 YEARS AGO June 21, 1918
FORT SMITH — Nearly every business man in Fort Smith today signed a petition asking the Sebastian Bridge District Commission to proceed at once with the construction of a reinforced concrete bridge across Arkansas river at the foot of Garrison avenue, connecting with Sequoyah county, Oklahoma. Opposition to some extent has developed against federal approval of the bonds required to finance the project, but the objectors are few, and it is believed approval for the bonds will be secured shortly.
50 YEARS AGO June 21, 1968
A desegregation plan for the state’s four training schools was approved Thursday by Federal Judge Oren Harris at a meeting in the judge’s chambers at Little Rock. Four of the five members of the Arkansas Juvenile Training School Board attended. Jess Reeves of Pine Bluff, a member of the Board, told Judge Harris that the Board anticipated that it would have difficulties meeting the schedule it had set up for itself in the plan. The judge retained jurisdiction and said the Board could seek more time later if it needed it.

The Heights. The name evokes images of affluent neighborhoods and crowded sidewalks lined with trendy shops. Crime is a thing that happens somewhere else. Relatively speaking, that’s true, the Heights Merchants Association president, Buddy Boswell, said recently. But a healthy dose of prevention could keep the Heights from the fate of other neighborhoods that once prospered but now suffer, he said. “There’s a perception that the Heights is immune from crime,” said Boswell, who owns and manages The Sketch Box at 5606 R St. But the neighborhood doesn’t exist inside an enchanted circle, he said.

Prosecutors filed felony sexual-assault charges Friday against a Crossett High School substitute teacher accused of having sex with a student. Dana Lynn Meeks, 32, was charged with three counts of sexual assault in the first degree. She is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old Crossett High student three times between April 1 and May 30, according to information filed in Ashley County Circuit Court and signed by Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Deen of the 10th Judicial District. A phone message left on Meeks’ cell phone was not immediately returned Friday.
