100 YEARS AGO June 22, 1918

FORT SMITH — The flour situation is so serious that several bakeries in this section are threatened with being closed on account of having exceeded their flour allowances. The Crawford County Food Administra­tion today attempted to shut off the supply of flour to two bakeries at Van Buren, but through the interventi­on of John G. Haffter of this city, captain of the bakery section of the Food Administra­tion for the western part of the state, they were permitted to remain in business.

50 YEARS AGO June 22, 1968

Dale Wilson Jones, 51, of 511 Ringo Street was shot to death Friday night after an argument at his home, the police reported. Jones was shot with a .22-caliber rifle at 10:10 p.m. The police were holding a suspect but no charges had been filed earlier today. After Jones was shot, he staggered to 518 Ringo, where he was picked up by ambulance and was taken to Arkansas Baptist Medical Center. He died at 10:25 p.m. Jones was shot in the left shoulder. The bullet hit his heart and passed completely through his body.

CONWAY —Police are investigat­ing allegation­s of brutality leveled against two officers by a man they arrested, sources said Monday. Police Chief Tim Daley confirmed an ongoing investigat­ion into “potential excessive force,” but refused to specify details. Officers Grant Tomlin and David Short submitted a report that they used “minimum force” June 12 to arrest Daniel Hegarty, 37, of Conway, who Short described as “extremely violent and intoxicate­d.” Hegarty was charged with driving while intoxicate­d and related offenses.

Pine Bluff police said a man shot and killed his older brother Friday night after an argument. Shortly after 6:30 p.m., Pine Bluff police officers were called to Flo and Shirley streets where they found Antonio Bennett, 28, lying on the ground in the backyard of a home at 11 Shirley St. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses told police that Antonio and his brother, Larry Bennett, 27, began arguing in the backyard and that argument escalated into a fight. Larry Bennett pulled a semiautoma­tic handgun and fired several shots at his brother, police said.
