Mayor Taylor has received a communication from Frank Pace, representing the War Camp Community Service Committee, asking that the City Council order the removal of the pool rooms on Louisiana street between Fourth street and Capitol avenue. In his petition Mr. Pace says that the unusually large number of negroes that congregate along the street in that locality makes it almost impossible for the white population to pass along the street at times, and that these pool rooms have become the favorite loafing places of a large number of negroes who do as little work as possible.

STAMPS — Douglas Alfred Wilson, 38, of Stamps was killed Saturday when a Cotton Belt Railroad freight train ran over him on tracks at Stamps. Lafayette County Coroner David Morehead said the crew of the northbound train told him they saw an object on the tracks 700 to 800 feet ahead and slammed on the emergency brakes. The train traveling about 55 miles an hour continued, hit Wilson and carried him about 80 feet. The train traveled about 1,500 feet more before it halted. Morehead said the crew reported that Wilson was sitting on the tracks, his elbows on his knees, his head in his hands.

PINE BLUFF — As fuel costs keep climbing, farmers and police say thieves are beginning to target off-road diesel tanks kept in fields throughout south Arkansas. In Desha County, about 3,000 gallons of offroad diesel have been reported stolen in six major thefts. The fuel was valued at about $12,600. “They’re stealing diesel fuel from the tanks of power units that farmers use to irrigate their fields,” said Desha County Sheriff Jim Snyder, whose department is investing a string of thefts that began June 19.
