‘Large fight’ in LR results in 2 arrests
Two vehicles with children inside them were struck by gunfire in a “large fight” outside a Little Rock mattress store Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Officers were called to Bedrock Mattress and More at 3901 S. University Ave. shortly before 4:45 p.m. on a report of “a large group” of people “fighting and shooting at each other.”
Two women told police that they were walking out of the business when a Dodge Charger sped toward them. When they ran back into the store, shots “rang out,” according to a Little Rock police report.
One of the women said three more vehicles then arrived and tried to surround them in the parking lot.
A woman accused of taking everyone to the scene told officers that the fight stemmed from a dispute at Stephens Elementary School in which her niece was assaulted. She identified 35-year-old Calvin Shavers of North Little Rock as the shooter, the report said.
A 31-year-old Little Rock woman said she was attacked in her Nissan Sentra while her children were in the vehicle. According to the report, 23-year-old Rhakelle Brown of Little Rock tried to stab the Sentra’s front passenger seat and pepper-spray everyone inside the car. The vehicle had a bullet hole in its trunk, an officer noted.
A 33-year-old North Little Rock resident told police that Brown also “came at her’” with a knife, the report said. She said her Ford Taurus was struck by gunfire when she tried to flee the scene with her children. The report said a Toyota Highlander also received damage.
Six children were reportedly at the scene during the fight.
Shavers faces eight counts of terroristic act, authorities said, and Brown was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of second-degree battery and one count of third-degree battery.
Records show that both were in the Pulaski County jail Wednesday night. No bail had been set.
