100 YEARS AGO July 12, 1918
SEARCY — J.F. Ramer, aged 39, killed himself Tuesday at his home near Smyrna, eight miles west of Searcy. At the inquest held by Coroner J.A. Chandler, the jury returned a verdict of suicide. The weapon being used was a shotgun, a broom stick being used to push the trigger. It is said that Ramer was in trouble and took this means of avoiding it. He is survived by his wife and seven children.

July 12, 1968 RUSSELLVILLE — Two Pope County men filed in Circuit Court Wednesday a civil suit seeking to overturn a County Court order that allowed the incorporation of the town of Ouita. The Plaintiffs, John Heidgen and J. Madison White, said the incorporation of the town, plus the earlier incorporation of Noristown, blocks Russellville from a section of land it intends to annex. Ouita’s incorporation was approved June 11 by County Judge Wayne Nordin. On the same day, Russellville voters approved the annexation of 10,000 acres stretching westward from Russellville to Lake Dardanelle.
25 YEARS AGO July 12, 1993 HOT SPRINGS — While some may find their work degrading to women, the dancers who perform topless at Centerfold Entertainment Club five nights a week insist they’re just trying to get by like everyone else. “It pays my bills and it’s fun, but it’s not a lifetime thing I want to do,” said Jessica, 21, who has been dancing for about nine months. The single mother of a 10-month-old daughter, Jessica said she started as a waitress at the club, but soon discovered she could make more money dancing.

July 12, 2008 BENTONVILLE — The man who shot and killed a father of four at a Lowell intersection in 2006 and his accomplice will spend the rest of their lives in prison after accepting a plea deal Friday. Serafin Sandoval-Vega, 21, pleaded guilty to capital murder while Manuel Enrique Camacho, 27, pleaded guilty to being an accomplice to capital murder. Benton County Circuit Judge Tom Keith sentenced them to life in prison. In Arkansas, defendants given a life sentence aren’t eligible for parole. The Rogers men pleaded guilty on what would have been the fourth day of jury selection at their trial. They avoided the death penalty sought by prosecutors.
