The owner of an adult day care is accused of shooting her son at her Little Rock home Saturday afternoon.

Officers responded to a report of shooting at a house on Leslie Circle about 2:15 p.m., the Little Rock police dispatch log shows. Police arrived to find Shay Stevens, 46, with a gun in her hand, according to an arrest report.

In an “excited utterance,” Stevens told officers she had shot her son, Shayne Simmons, 18, according to the report.

Simmons was taken to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock to be treated for a single gunshot wound. His injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.

Stevens was booked into the Pulaski County jail on a charge of first-degree domestic battery. She remained there with no bail set Saturday evening.

Stevens is listed as the administrator for Millennium Adult Day Care on the Arkansas Department of Human Services website. She was featured on the front page of the July 16 edition of Arkansas Business for her work with the operation. Simmons works for her, according to the article.

A woman who lives two houses down said she didn’t hear gunshots but saw an ambulance pulling up to the home when she was taking her dog out. She said the victim was limping and appeared to have been shot in the leg.

“We’re just shocked. This is the sweetest street. We just love our neighborhood,” said another neighbor, who declined to give her name.
