Personal grooming vital to successful job interview

- By Gary Moore Insight Edge

Some of you might consider this a “tough love” statement, but you need to know the truth:

We live in an era where appearance is an important element in the hiring process. Sure, it’s shallow, deceptive at times and unfair, but it is a reality. It can also be a deciding factor on who gets the best job offers.

Some might think personal grooming is an unnecessary topic to cover in a career section because “common sense will rule.” One thing is for sure — common sense isn’t common. It’s unique.

Most people dress and prepare themselves for an interview from a personal perspective. Let’s face the fact: In this case, your perspective means very little. The important perspective is that of the person who is doing the hiring.

Follow these basic tips to put your best foot forward at a job interview.

Shoes: Every day, and prior to each interview, your shoes should be polished and flawless. Even if you’re applying for a position where you’ll normally wear tennis shoes, you should wear dress shoes during the interview.

Hair: Tresses should always be clean and neatly tended. Personally, I think it’s best not to be try to make a “statement” with your hair. You can certainly disagree, but do realize that I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, and I understand hair statements. A job interview isn’t the time to prove something.

Teeth: Be sure to brush and floss (yes, floss) after each meal and prior to an interview.

Eyes: Get the red out by getting a good night’s sleep before an interview. Use eye drops if needed to make sure your eyes are clear.

Breath: Indulge in a good dose of mouthwash before leaving the house, and take along breath mints or gum (not to be consumed during the interview). On second thought, breath spray may work best.

Armpits: Now isn’t the time to enjoy and spread the natural aroma of humankind. A good-quality deodorant that also serves as an antiperspirant is best.

Clothing: An interview shouldn’t be won by your physical sexuality. Men and women alike should dress modestly and appropriately. When a person is hired primarily because of physical appeal, more problematic issues often follow.

Good luck in your interviews.
