Bear facts on display

The commercial begins with a close shot of a fir tree in a forest. Words appear superimposed on the screen as a voiceover reads: “A storm is coming. You cannot defeat the storm.” Cut to a still shot of a menacing Kodiak bear as the voiceover continues: “I am the Storm, the Great American Grizzly Bear. Introducing Trumpy Bear …” Cut to a teddy bear, with “comb-able” blond hair, cradled in a woman’s arms, then dolly back as she pulls (surprise, surprise) an American flag from inside Trumpy Bear. Then cut to a woman, all decked out for the Fourth of July, who proudly declares: “God Bless America, and God Bless Trumpy Bear.” Next, a medium-close shot of a retired Marine sitting astride a Harley-Davidson (of all things) with Trumpy Bear riding the handlebars. Finally, cut to a golfer sinking a putt as he declares that Trumpy Bear has improved his game.

O, the irony! Wasn’t it Trump who promised to build a wall? “Mexico’ll pay for it.” Didn’t Nieto tell him to stuff it?

Didn’t Trump call Kim “Little Rocket Man” and vow to wipe North Korea off the map? But after Singapore he wussed, suspending U.S.-South Korean war games just as Kim and Xi wanted.

And then there’s that recent bro-mantic tryst in Helsinki. Trump’s “base” may see him as a tough guy, but Xi and Kim see a “paper tiger.” And Putin knows that the “Great American Grizzly Bear” is really a silly teddy bear. FLEMING STOCKTON
