BOBBIE JEAN WILLINGHAM BOHLAR, 65, of Little Rock, Ark. transition­ed peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018. Born March 1, 1953, in Pine Bluff, Ark., she was the fourth child of the late Thomas Claudell Willingham and the late Myrtle Bracy Willingham.

After graduating from Pine Bluff High School in 1971, she received a full music scholarshi­p to AM&N. While on campus, she quickly became well-known by her “powerful voice.” She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a charter member and founder of Mu Alpha Mu Honorary Choral Society for the Vesper Choir. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, Bobbie used her God-given gifts and talents as a school teacher and served as Minister of Music for various churches. Later, Bobbie worked for the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administra­tion for 33 years when she retired in 2016.

Bobbie is preceded in death by her two brothers, Willie Andrew and Thomas Willingham Jr. She leaves loving memories to cherish with her daughter, Chari Kentle Walker; her grandson, Thomas Jefferson Walker; and her brother, Lee (Joyce) Willingham, all of Little Rock, Ark. She also leaves to cherish her memories two nieces, three nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

Ms. Bohlar will Lie In State from 2-5 p.m. at the funeral home Monday, Sept. 10, 2018. Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018 from 9:30-11 a.m. at the church.

Rev. Dr. MICHAEL O. CARTER, 71, of Little Rock, Ark. transition­ed on September 1,

2018 from his earthly home to his heavenly home. A man of impeccable work ethic, Dr. Carter was a 34-year employee of Baptist Health System.

Dr. Carter was deeply committed to his ministry, which impacted the lives of many. He accepted pastorate calls at the following churches in Arkansas Conference: Coleman Chapel #2 in Gethsemane, Arkansas; New Mount Zion AME Zion Hattesvill­e, Arkansas; Moores Chapel AME Zion Church in Cleveland, Arkansas; Coleman Chapel AME Zion Church of Little Rock, Arkansas. At the time of his demise, Dr. Carter was a pastor of Grace Temple AME Zion Church of Little Rock, and for the past 12 years, Presiding Elder of the Little Rock – Hot Springs District. He was also a delegate to five General Conference­s of the AME Zion Church.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 41 years, Lillie Jenkins-Carter, stepmother, Mary Porter of Anderson, Indiana. Two daughters, Tanya Carter-James (Terrance), Michelle Carter, one grandson, Noah Carter, two brothers, Clifford M. Carter and Manual Hunt (Louise), of Anderson, Indiana. JEAN C. CHISHOLM died on Sept. 4 in Little Rock. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Roger K. Chisholm.

Jean is survived by her three children, Margaret C.

Massey (James) of Nashville, Tenn., Janet C. Webster and Elizabeth C. Jordan, both of Memphis, Tenn. She is also survived by her seven grandchild­ren: Nicholas Jordan, James Webster, Andrew Jordan, Anna Webster, Elizabeth Massey, Alexandra Massey, and William Massey.

Jean graduated from Stephens College (AS, 1956), University of Missouri (BS, 1958), and Iowa State University (MS, 1960). She was a Registered Dietician who shared her love of science first as a professor at the University of Missouri and later in hospitals in Kansas, Illinois, and Arkansas. She was a driving force in the success of the Home Delivered Meals program in Memphis through Metropolit­an Inter-Faith Associatio­n (MIFA). She and Roger continued their service to humanitari­an rights and equality in Little Rock, volunteeri­ng for many organizati­ons supporting social justice.

Jean was an ordained elder of the PCUSA and was an active member of Second Presbyteri­an Church, where she became a Stephen minister, as well as an usher, communion server, and Stewpot volunteer. She greatly enjoyed delivering boxes of food to friends at the Arkansas Food Bank.

–––––❖––––– DORTHY HENDERSON CROSLAND, a longtime resident of North Little Rock passed Sept. 6, 2018 at Lakewood Nursing and Rehab.

She was born April 27, 1932 to Ervin and Della Rowlett Henderson of Guy, Ark.

Preceded in death by her parents, spouse of 46 years, Jerry Crosland, sisters, Betty Earnhart, Nora Lee Halsey and brother, Bill Henderson. Survivors include her children, Ricky Crosland (Vickie) of Sherwood, Randy Crosland (Becky) of North Little Rock, Rocky Crosland of El Paso, Robin Crosland Haley (Mike) of Heber Springs, sister, Louise Ward of Conway, brother-in-law, Charles Earnhart of Mayflower and close companion and friend Arlis Owens of North Little Rock.

Her pride and joy were her 10 grandchild­ren, 16 great-grandchild­ren and many nieces and nephews who were close to her heart. She was a member of Levy Church of Christ for many years. He was born on December 21, 1928 in Kerville, Texas to the late Ernest and Annie Davis. He is also preceded in death by his son, Danny

Tom loved his family and enjoyed being a father and husband.

–––––❖––––– THAD GILBERT DIEMER, age 90, of Little Rock, Ark., passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018. He was born on Jan. 8, 1928 in Little Rock, Ark., to his late parents, Sam and Nettie Diemer.

Thad worked for Rock Island Railroad for more than 11 years and as a barber for more than 55 years. In addition, he was a veteran of the United States Navy and the Constructi­on Battalion.

He is survived by his two sons; Dennis Diemer of Little Rock and Ricky Diemer (Barbara) of Benton; two grandchild­ren, Michael and Erich; three great-grandchild­ren, Kattie, Blaine and Trinity. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Robert, Ray, Mable, Tony and Ed, and his wife Relma Diemer.

–––––❖––––– MARION DEATRICE (DUNCAN) ELLIOTT, 78, of Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away on September 5, 2018 to join the Lord and her loved ones in heaven.

She was born March 9, 1940 in McGehee, Arkansas to the late Simon Duncan and Elverus Crosby Duncan.

She was a devoted Mother, Grandmothe­r and new Great-Grandmothe­r to her family. Marion was a longtime member of Christ Temple Cathedral Church of Christ Holiness USA where she served as a Deaconess, Pastor Aide, Sunday School teacher and the United Christian Women Missionary Society. In the community, she volunteere­d with the Literacy Council, Foster Grandparen­ts Program and Associatio­n of Community Organizati­ons for Reform (ACOR). At the grassroots level, Marion supported voter registrati­on and fair housing programs.

Marion graduated from Coleman High School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Immediatel­y upon graduation, she left for Chicago, Ill., and continued her education at Cortez W. Peters Business College of Chicago earning a Secretaria­l Sciences Diploma. Marion entered the workforce at the height of the Civil Rights Movement and integrated several office environmen­ts such as General Electric, US Post Office, and federal government agencies. In the State of Arkansas, she worked for the government agencies of the Department of Correction­s and Unemployme­nt Compensati­on Office. Later in life, Marion would complete her Bachelor of Science of Business Administra­tion Degree at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff.

Marion was preceded in death by four siblings Alexander V. McDonald, Simon Hugh Duncan, Eddie Paul Duncan and Emma Lydia (Duncan) Burch. She leaves to cherish her memory, two loving children from an early marriage, Voncile Elliott Gilbreath (Larry) of Chesapeake, Virginia and Johnny B. Elliott, III of Temple, Texas; six grandchild­ren Justin, Ryan, Duncan, Joshua, Raquel, Nicoli and one great-grandson, Perry; her brother Mannie Alford (Al) Duncan (Mamie); sistersin-law Clara Adele Duncan and Opal Duncan; brother-in-law Aaron Burch and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

–––––❖––––– ALVIN E. LOCK, 89, of Maumelle went to be with the Lord Sept. 7, 2018. He was born March 2, 1929 on the Lock Family Farm east of Conway on Rural Route 4 to Ernest and Mary Catherine Bruich Lock. Alvin graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1948. He was a member of St.

Joseph Catholic Church from the time he was born until marrying the love of his life on Nov.

19, 1955 at Our Lady of Good Counsel. Alvin and Betty Jo made Our Lady of Good Counsel their home church for the past 63 years. Alvin served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the 31st Regimental Combat Team and was discharged in 1952 at Fort Bragg, N.C. He retired from Union Pacific Railroad after working 35 years as a machinist. Alvin loved to volunteer and help others.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; James and Clarence Lock. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Rechtin Lock; son, Larry Lock (Kerrie); granddaugh­ter, Hannah Camille (Lock) Huckaby; three great-grandchild­ren, Corbin Pierce Lock, Neelie Ray Huckaby, Harper Lee Huckaby; sister, Mary Weber; three brothers, Ernest Lock Jr., Donald Lock, Dennis Lock; and a host of loving family and friends.

He was a member of First Christian Church, graduated from Pine Bluff High School and Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphi­a. He worked for Arkansas State Rehabilita­tion, Settle Uniform Services, and Poly America.

–––––❖––––– J.T. SHUMATE, 85, of Little Rock passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2018. He was born April 30, 1933 in Greenbrier, Ark., to Bob and Vivian Shumate.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Shumate; parents; four brothers and six sisters. J.T. is survived by his children, Tim (Sharon) Shumate, Tina (Steve) Harrod, Bobby (Brandi) Shumate and Rodney Shumate; grandchild­ren, Magen (Jared) Rodriguez, Morgan Shumate, Colton Harrod, Savannah (William) Morgan, Blakelea (Stephen) Leach, Madison Shumate and Jayden Shumate; great-grandchild­ren, Ellery, Adler, Hunter and Brianna; his favorite dog, Prissy; and several other family, friends and loved ones.

He proudly served in the United States Army and served his country honorably. He was a truck driver for many years, where he eventually retired from Hall Tank Company. –––––❖––––– CARLTON HAMES WARE, age 75, of Little Rock, died peacefully Sept. 5, 2018. He was born Aug. 20, 1943 in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Hames graduated from Henderson State University and received a Master’s Degree in Speech and Communicat­ion from the University of Arkansas – Fayettevil­le. He taught school for several years in Pine Bluff. Hames then worked as Education Coordinato­r for Youth Home Inc., where he took great pleasure in helping the students to be more successful in school. For many years, Hames worked doing radio and television voice-overs, for both local and national audiences, specializi­ng in character voices. In 2012, Hames retired from Central Arkansas Library System, where he trained and mentored many Pages over the years. Hames was recognized nationally as an authority on comic book art and artists. He co-edited the Who’s Who of American Comic Books and contribute­d to countless other publicatio­ns. Shortly before his death, he donated his extensive archive to the Comics Collection in Columbia University’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library, where it will be available for research to the global community of scholars.

Hames was an extremely loyal friend and maintained many lifelong friendship­s. He was a prolific correspond­ent and was always solicitous of others, eager to help. An avid learner, he immersed himself in whatever subject he became interested in. Hames always maintained his optimistic outlook and sense of wonder, particular­ly of the natural world. His sense of humor and storytelli­ng gift brought joy to all who knew him. He was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie Frances (Hames) Ware and Carlton Victor Ware Jr., and his brother, Allan Robert Ware. He is survived by his sister, Lynne Clifton.

There will be a service for Hames at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 12415 Cantrell Road, Little Rock, Ark. 72223 at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, followed by a reception.

After her mother was widowed at a young age, she and her siblings returned to Cabot. Hazel worked in a motor plant for many years, going to cosmetolog­y school part-time to obtain her cosmetolog­ist license. She began her beauty career working for Gene’s Beauty Shop, later starting and managing her own shop. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, ceramics and gathering with the family. A life well-lived and much loved. Holidays will not be the same without her.

Richard was born Jan. 15, 1932 in McNeil, Ark., to Arthur Edward and Maude Alma Bennett Kirkpatric­k. He was a 1949 graduate of Magnolia High School and a graduate of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Arkansas School for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. After graduation, he served as a medic and pharmacist in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany and Paris, France. After his discharge, he joined a close friend, Arch Ellington, of Hope, Ark., in Juneau, Alaska, and worked as pharmacist­s enjoying a life of hunting and fishing in the Last Frontier, before returning to Arkansas to marry and settle down. He was the co-owner of M&D Pharmacy with Goss Dansby in Camden, Ark. A lifelong Methodist, he was an active and faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Magnolia where he was a member of the Chancel Choir, Pairs and Spares Class, Leland Clegg Class, a Gideon, and a member of the Square Dance club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Billie Jean Graves Kirkpatric­k in October 2006; and brother, Thomas E. Kirkpatric­k in May 2017.

He’s survived by his three sons, David H. Kirkpatric­k of Magnolia, Daniel Kirkpatric­k, and wife Barbara, of Nashville, Ark., John Kirkpatric­k and wife, Kristin of Magnolia; four grandchild­ren, Matthew Kirkpatric­k, Catherine Kirkpatric­k, Ryan Hudgens, and Reed Kirkpatric­k; nieces and nephews: Gena (Kirkpatric­k) Davis, and husband, Allen, Dr. Gregg (Kathy) Marshall, Art Graves, Robin (Harvey) Tallant, Robert (Suyapa) Graves, and Melissa (Michael) Smith; and by four-legged companions, Molly and Tara.

Aug. 16, 1934, in the farming community of Richwoods, Ark.

Her parents, Henry Wood and Annie Mae (Hollingshe­ad) Wood, raised her in Gurdon, Ark., where she was a member of Beech Street Baptist Church and the Gurdon High School Class of 1952. It was in Gurdon where she fell head over heels for the handsome Carl Koen Jr., who became her husband in 1956.

Peggy graduated with a BS from Ouachita Baptist College in the spring of 1956, and after their marriage that summer, the two headed to Mountain View, Calif., where Carl was stationed in his service in the Navy.

Peggy taught school in California, and later in Waco and Houston, Texas. The two moved to Pine Bluff, Ark., in 1965 with their young son, Roger. Daughter Carla was born in 1967.

Peggy had many loves, from playing piano, singing and reading to laughing over things that others might miss. She and Carl shared a love for adventure, and traveled to six continents together. Her life and her heart were full.

Peggy was preceded in death by her brother, Roger, and her parents. Her survivors include her beloved husband, Dr. Carl Koen, children, Roger Koen of Dallas and Carla Koen (and husband Reade Mitchell) of Little Rock, and brother Henry Ward Wood Jr. (Melba) of Texarkana, Texas. She also leaves behind her extended family, many longtime friends, the ladies of the 20th Century Club, and her church family at First Baptist of Pine Bluff.

She was born on May 25, 1949, in Los Angeles, Calif., the daughter of Jack

Donald Farris and Betty King

Farris, both of whom preceded her in death. On

Dec. 3, 2014, she married Dane Merritt.

She grew up in Eagle Rock, a small community in the greater Los Angeles area and moved to pursue challenges and opportunit­ies in New York, Reno, L.A., Portland, Phoenix, and Dallas. A woman ahead of her time, she was a Commercial Constructi­on Executive in the ’70’s. When she went to her workplace, she shined with exuberance and a “get it done” attitude. She retired in 2012.

Bev became a Master Gardener in 2013 and became involved in several projects with the Master Gardeners’ work. She especially liked working with the youth program called, “Young Gardeners of Garland County.” Bev was a Docent with Garvan Woodland Gardens; she gave walking tours to visitors like the Road Scholars, educating garden patrons on its background and history. Bev was the Chair for the GEMS project, which improved the maintenanc­e and planting program of Garvan Woodland Gardens. She also served as Secretary on the executive board for two years.

One of Bev’s most cherished works was for the Hot Springs Middle School Special Needs Class; she was directly responsibl­e for designing and coordinati­ng their gardening program. Bev and the children worked together to create, grow, harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor…. The children were hands-on and enjoyed, with Bev’s tutelage, the wonderful value of gardening.

Her brother Jack stated, “She always carried a warmth for others, had a quick wit and her laugh would win over even the most jaded person. She quickly made friends wherever she went.”

She was very passionate about animal welfare. She rescued many dogs, cats, rabbits, and any wildlife that needed her help over the years. Her love and nurture for her animals will be greatly missed by them.

She is survived by her husband, Dane C. Merritt of Royal; her stepson and daughter-in-law, Alec J. “Jake” and Allison Merritt of Harlingen, Texas; her brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Sally Farris; and her niece, Rebecca Farris, all of San Diego, Calif.; other extended family members and a host of wonderful friends.

A celebratio­n of her life will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, in the Garvan Woodland Gardens Pavilion. In lieu of flowers and other customary condolence­s, memorials may be made to the Children’s Garden at Garvan Woodland Gardens.

Jessica was a lifetime member of Pilgrim Valley Missionary Baptist Church, she was involved in the youth department. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized by Pastor Rev. William Fields in December 2001.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by daughters, Danni Jo Bueker and Marci Berry; and grandson, Benjamin Joseph Bueker. She was born on March 11, 1931 to Drew and Orpha Hohn in Tuckerman (Decker Store), Ark. She grew up on the Bandy Farm near Tuckerman and attended Tuckerman High School where she served as class treasurer. Nina graduated in 1949 and eloped with her high school sweetheart, Johnny Patton on March 21, 1949. From that union came Nina Renee, John Drew, Wendell Cory and Denna Lorraine Patton.

Nina was a homemaker and caregiver extraordin­aire the majority of her adult life. Caring for her husbands, children, and her parents was her passion in life. Nina was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tuckerman, Ark. Shortly after Everett died Nina moved back to California to be close to her children.

She loved her Boston Terrier, Max, her parents and her kids. She enjoyed reading, watching old TV shows, and reminiscin­g about the good old days with friends and family while holding her dog. Nina will be missed by her family more than words can convey but know she’s enjoying a reunion of a lifetime with all of her loved ones.

Keeth. Mrs. Ferrell was reared and received her early education in Plum Bayou, graduating from Plum Bayou High School in 1951.

She was a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Pine Bluff. Mrs. Ferrell worked for the Arkansas Division of Youth Services for over 20 years, retiring as the personnel manager.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Webb E. Ferrell Jr.; her parents; sister, Margaret Shock; and great-grandson, Andrew Webb Ferrell. Survivors include her son, Roy Webb Ferrell (Trish) of White Hall; daughter, Donna Sue Ford (Tim) of White Hall; sister, Bernice Freeman of Brandon, Miss.; sister-in-law, Melba Miller of Benton; six grandchild­ren, 13 great-grandchild­ren and many loving nieces and nephews.
