The new Deep Throat

-

The identity of the person known as “Deep Throat” in Nixon/Watergate times was revealed after 30 years as an FBI agent, a career public servant, who found himself morally bound to take part in bringing a halt to illegal government activities in that era.

Today, there is a frantic search in the Trump White House for another “Deep Throat” who, fed up with the corruption of government purpose, continued lying by senior officials, and general loss of confidence in the executive branch, is doing what he/she sees as a patriotic duty to bring to light the manner and methods by which we are being deprived of our constitutional right to proper government. As the legislative branch has taken a partisan stance and refuses to perform its constitutional duty to provide balance to the disordered state advanced by the executive branch, someone else must take action.

That would be those of us who recognize the difference between how things are and how things should be. We must sharpen our analysis of today’s events, not swallow without question what Fox News would feed us, and see the truths staring us in the face. We cannot continue to accept the “alternative facts” propounded by the White House, but demand of ourselves and our fellow citizens that we use our God-given American common sense to guide our decisions about the reliability of information.

A common axiom taught to American children is, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is!” Campaign promises are a dollar a gross, but unless we maintain a properly skeptical attitude, we are prone to accept propositions we hear associated with “good” results. Combining promises of prosperity with high tariffs on imports which will raise their cost; huge expenditures for the “wall” and delaying addressing infrastructure needs, etc., are not compatible goals. We have seen the actual results of voodoo economics before, but many voters still respond to this siren song.

It’s time to wake up, open our eyes, and be practical.
