Choose a family event

- — Story by Cody Graves, special sections writer

6pending time with family can have a lasting impact on parents and children alike, but choosing a family activity can be difficult at times. “It is so important for families to spend quality time together because that really is the only way to deepen and strengthen relationships,” said Darlene Phillips, women’s-ministry director at Balboa Baptist Church in Hot Springs Village. “It creates good memories for future times when things might seem difficult.” There are many options available to consider, so here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a family outing. When choosing a fun family event, look at what is available in your area. Check local newspapers for event times in your city. A local event will reduce travel time and the expense of fuel. However, if there is an out-of-town event that is unique or appeals to the whole family, it can be worth the extra expense. “Every family has a budget they must consider,” she said. “If an event will bring the family closer together through laughter and meaningful interaction, then it is worth the cost.” Take each of the family members’ interests into consideration when picking an event. Festivals and fairs typically offer a variety of music, rides and games that can appeal to kids and adults. Events that mix music and comedy can also be a great way to find an event that the whole family will love. “I look for something that will encourage interaction and result in a positive family experience and memory,” she said. “Laughter is so good for us. It lightens the load of the problems and stress of everyday living. When families can laugh together, it creates stability and sweet memories.” On Friday, Oct. 5, Balboa Baptist Church will host comedian Scott Davis and Hope Through Hilarity. Davis began his career as a singer and now produces a show that inspires and brings hope, Phillips said. “People can expect to laugh out loud at the clean, hilarious way Scott relates to life,” she said. “Everyone can expect to leave the event with uplifted spirits.” Phillips also said family events can be a great way for grandparents to bond with their grandchildren. From the car ride to the event to the time spent together, the bond between grandparents and their grandchildren can be strengthened. “Grandchildren grow up so quickly, and I believe we should take every opportunity to enjoy time spent together,” she said.
