:electing a senior living residence is much like choosing any new place to live, with location, cost and amenities being pertinent considerations. Many seniors are adamant that they want a facility close to where they have always lived. Family members often want their loved ones to move to a facility near them so they can visit more. Often times, the continuation of care offered at one location is also a consideration. “For example, Mt. Carmel Community at The Village offers independent living, assisted living and memory-care options at the same convenient location,” said Jimmy Elrod, managing partner at the Mt. Carmel Community. One of the biggest mistakes seniors or their families make is waiting too long to make the decision to search out an appropriate senior living facility, Elrod said. Consider making the move while you’re still relatively active and can enjoy the freedom and amenities offered. Finding the right facility, level of care and location is a big decision. Making that choice before you absolutely have to is less stressful and can even be exciting, with the right attitude and outlook, he said. Senior living communities vary greatly in the areas of services and amenities they provide. A well-rounded assisted-living facility will offer amenities that go far beyond just providing meals. Housekeeping is usually included. Flat linen service, which includes bed linens and towels, and laundry options are other amenities to explore, he said. Check to see if transportation to the doctor, shopping centers, churches and other destinations is provided. Assisted-living facilities often have beauty salons, exercise rooms, media rooms, private dining rooms, sitting areas, libraries and computer stations. A vibrant activity schedule is also important when considering senior living options. Activities that encourage both physical and mental stimulation, as well as social opportunities, are invaluable in helping new residents feel at home in their new environment.

Assisted-living apartments are the backbone of most senior living communities. Typically, there are various floor plans and sizes from which to choose. Stay as independent as you can, while getting the assistance you need with medication management and activities of daily living.

A memory-care department is a special program for those who need more assistance and a secured environment. Consider looking to see if a facility has the special designation of an Alzheimer’s special care unit.

Independent garden homes are another option. Many find this setting a more palatable transition from their home. You can still get meals provided, housekeeping and lawn care but have the peace of mind of being in a protected environment. “I believe the social interaction is invaluable to this setting,” Elrod said.

The Mt. Carmel Community is not affiliated with any religious denomination but is very much considered a Christian community whose mission statement is: God-driven — to minister to seniors with a loving, caring devotion, Elrod said. “You are encouraged to go to our website at mtcarmel community.com to learn more about us,” he said. “Come see why Mt. Carmel Community is truly considered the pinnacle of senior living.” Elrod said that Mt. Carmel is offering a variety of special promotions to coincide with its 10-year anniversary. The promotions are available at both its locations in Benton and Hot Springs Village, he said.
