Glen Rose displeases coach despite rout of Baptist Prep

- MIKE SMITH SPECIAL TO THE DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

Glen Rose scored on five of its first six possessions and all three times in the second half, rolling to a 57-12 victory over Baptist Prep on the Eagles home field Friday night.

Baptist Prep (4-5-1, 3-4 3A-4 Conference) helped the Beavers (9-1, 7-0) by turning the ball over three times, twice in its first three possessions. Glen Rose quarterback JT Towers threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more.

Still, Glen Rose Coach Mark Kehner was not pleased.

“We were terrible tonight,” he said. “We didn’t come out mentally ready to play, and that’s crazy when you win 57-12.

“Baptist Prep played a lot better than we did, and I have to take my hat off to them.”

Glen Rose, the top seed out of the 3A-4, earns a bye in the first round, but Kehner doesn’t plan to increase his practice intensity despite his feelings Friday night.

“We know what to do. We have to get our minds on the task at hand,” he said.

Kehner said practice isn’t the way to get better 11 weeks into the season.

“You gotta understand, everybody practices like a champion,” he said. “You gotta do it when the lights are on.

“Our offense was terrible. We didn’t block anybody. Our defense was average, we gave up a couple of deep balls for touchdowns.”

Both of the Eagles touchdowns came on successive series in the second quarter on passes from senior quarterback Gage Hall to senior wide receiver Robert Lewis. The first came on a second and 24 and covered 66 yards. The second came on fourth down and covered 46 yards.

Glen Rose kept the ball on the ground through most of its first possession, completing only one pass from junior quarterback JT Powers to senior wide receiver Jace Haynes. It was good for 23 yards and gave the Beavers a first down at the Baptist Prep 6. Powers ran for the touchdown on the next play.

Powers connected with Haynes again on the next possession, good for 27 yards and a first down at the Baptist Prep 13. Two 7-yard runs by Dalen Baldwin resulted in a touchdown.

Glen Rose tacked on another touchdown when Colby Steed picked up a fumble by Mitchell Leavitt and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

After forcing a Baptist Prep punt, the Beavers scored on a 1-yard run by Towers, then on a pass from Towers that resulted in a 31-12 halftime edge.

The Beavers also scored on a 19-yard pass to Mathew Clark, an 11-yard pass to Haynes, a 14-yard run by Steed and a 57-yard interception return.
