Events scheduled to honor veterans.

Navy admiral to visit NLR museum

A number of Veterans Day activities are scheduled for today and Monday in Little Rock and North Little Rock.

From 1-4 p.m. today, U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Brian P. Fort, who’s originally from Arkansas, will visit the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum at 120 Riverfront Park Drive in North Little Rock. During his visit, he will spend time meeting with Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum board members and tour the museum. At 2 p.m., Fort is scheduled to give brief remarks to people in attendance.

Fort is the commander of Navy Region Hawaii, and the Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, based out of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.

On Monday, the state will hold several Veterans Day activities at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History and the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, according to the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs.

The state Veterans Affairs Department worked with the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, AETN, Arkansas Agricultur­e Department, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and AARP to plan the multiple events. Events include: Veterans’ Eligibilit­y and Life Fair, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., with a 10 a.m. recess, second floor, MacArthur museum, 503 E. Ninth St., Little Rock.

Veterans Day observance, 10 a.m., Arkansas Arts Center, 501 E. Ninth St., which is next-door to the museum. Gov. Asa Hutchinson will be the featured speaker. The theme of this year’s ceremony is Post 9/11 Veterans: A Veterans Coming Home.

On Monday, American Legion National Commander Brett P. Reistad of Manassas, Va., will visit Arkansas. His schedule includes a visit to the Grant County Museum, and the B-17 Memorial Park, near Sheridan.

He will also be in the state Tuesday. His schedule on that day includes a meeting with Hutchinson to discuss veterans issues.

Reistad will also visit the VA Day Treatment Center and VA Medical Center in Little Rock, as well as the Arkansas Veterans Home at Fort Roots and the VA regional office in North Little Rock.
