FORT SMITH — The United States marshal’s office was advised today that Omar Osborne was held in jail at Waldron on a charge of moonshining. He will be brought here for a preliminary examination. T. M. Hale and Lonnie Vaughn of Scott county were held to the Grand Jury by Commissioner Dunblazier on moonshining charges and L. V. Hale was dismissed. They were arrested several weeks ago near the Montgomery county line.

PARAGOULD — A precautionary measure taken by the two constitutional convention runoff candidates in District 11 (Greene and Craighead Counties) could cast some doubt on the results of similar elections Tuesday in other districts across the state. There is a contention in District 11 that if the boxes used in the constitutional convention delegate runoff election are not the same as used in the general election on November 5, the election is illegal. The election officials here point to state statutes that say voting boundaries can’t be changed within 30 days of an election. Where there were dozens of precincts in Greene and Craighead Counties in the general election, there were only two boxes, one in each county, in Tuesday’s runoff.

CONWAY — Beavis and Butt-head won’t be burning up the airways in Conway if a committee’s recommendation is approved. The city-owned Conway Corp. Cable Television System Programming Committee unanimously recommended Thursday that the system drop MTV because of objections to its content, including the cartoon show “Beavis and Butt-head.” The committee does not have the final say, but is influential because members include the mayor, city aldermen or their designees, and the Conway Corp. general manager. The board of directors will make a final decision sometime early next year.

TEXARKANA — State child protective services caseworkers spent Wednesday finding foster homes for the 20 children seized from the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries while a search continued for other children who were missed during a sweep of Alamo properties. The children, 11 boys and nine girls, were taken into protective custody Tuesday after Arkansas State Police officers and Department of Human Services caseworkers went to Alamo’s compound in Fouke and to more than a dozen Alamo-controlled homes and businesses in the Fort Smith area. No children were found at those places, but 17 were found after police stopped two vans on Arkansas 245 in Texarkana, headed towards the Texas state line. Three brothers, the youngest of whom appeared to be at least 12, were taken into custody at the Juvenile Court Center in Texarkana, where they had been attending a hearing on the custody status of four girls who were taken from the compound after a raid in September.
