LONOKE — Three prisoners broke jail here Friday night. They had been returned from the Pulaski county jail and they were awaiting trial. It is believed that they brought a saw with them from Little Rock. One of the prisoners went to see his lawyer for advice as to whether he had better remain in jail or skip out with the other prisoners. He surrendered.

FORT SMITH — Donna Lea Franklin, 14, was charged with first-degree murder Friday in connection with the shooting of her father at their home near Greenwood. … Prosecutor Bill Thompson said he filed the charge on the basis of a ballistics report from the state crime laboratory and other information. The girl’s father, Leroy Franklin, 39, was shot to death early Wednesday. The mother, Ida Lea Franklin, 37, also was shot and remained in critical condition Friday at the hospital.

■ The Little Rock Board of Directors moved directly from a two-day retreat on teamwork to a half-hour fight at its weekly breakfast meeting Tuesday. The session was the board members’ first since the Sunday and Monday retreat, in which directors studied management techniques primarily used in the private sector. City Manager Charles Nickerson estimated that the retreat cost up to $1,200. City Director Jeff Sharp, who said he was sick Monday and could not attend the retreat’s second day, called it a “teetotaling waste of time.” That comment was enough to set off some strongly worded exchanges between directors. … After the morning meeting, [Director Carl] Scheibner played down the arguments. “Even the best of families squabble,” he said.

■ A suspect in four bank robberies was tracked down by the Little Rock Police Department after his fingerprints were matched with a cup involved in a Subway restaurant robbery and a confidential informant recognized him from surveillance photos, police said. … A fingerprint from the cup and information from a fellow employee at a west Little Rock Wingstop restaurant helped police obtain a warrant for Nickol Eugene Carter, a 36-yearold Georgia parolee, who was arrested last month as he got off a bus in Atlanta. The detective said Carter’s lack of family ties in Little Rock could have made him more difficult to catch if it hadn’t been for the informant. … “If we hadn’t identified him, he would have continued on because nobody in Little Rock knew who he was,” [detective Terrell] Vaughn said.
