–––––❖––––– SUSIE BOYETT died April 28, 2019. She was 81 years of age. Susie was the daughter of Harry Hoffman and Dorothy Taylor Hoffman.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Boyett; son, Charles Comer Boyett, III; known to her two grandsons as “Ding”, Charles Eliot Caplan, Andrew Calvin Caplan; sister-in-law, Grace Hoffman; and four nieces, Susan H. Adams, Ellen H. Grashot, Claire McGeorge, and Grace Anne McGeorge. Susie was preceded in

death by her husband, Charles Comer Boyett, Jr.; and brother, Robert Hoffman.

She was a native of Arkansas, attending

Ole Miss, UALR, and graduated with a Masters

Degree in Library Science from the University of Alabama.

She worked as a Librarian in Dardanelle, Ark., North Florida, and eventually became the Director of the White County Library System. Susie was a member of P.E.O. and the Hillcrest Garden Club. She also volunteere­d for C.A.R.E. for Animals, Inc. She had a love of good books, good wine, and good friends. For those who knew her, she will be greatly missed.

–––––❖––––– ROBERT G. “BOB” CRESS of Little Rock died at home on April 30, 2019 under the care of Arkansas Hospice.

He was born November 26, 1932 and Little Rock has always been his home. He was the son of

Vera and George

Cress. He attended Little

Rock public schools and graduated in 1950 from Little Rock High School. He attended Vanderbilt University where he graduated Cum Laude in 1954. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honorary fraternity and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

After college Bob became a Certified Public Accountant. He worked five years with the local accounting firm of Hennegin, Croft and Cotham (now Howland and Norris). In 1959 he joined J.A. Riggs Tractor Company, remaining there for 43 years and retiring in 2002 as Chairman of the Board and part owner.

Over the years he was active and supportive of many charitable and civic organizati­ons. He was on the Board of Arkansas Children’s Hospital for 35 years. He was President in 1976 through 1979 when the hospital was beginning to expand its outreach. He was elected Emeritus to this board in 2000 and continued on the foundation board until 2014 when he was elected Emeritus to this board as well. Bob was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Little Rock, and chaired their Board of Trustees in 2006.

He chaired the Pulaski County Chapter of the American Red Cross 1968-1970; chaired the Arkansas Hospital Equipment Finance Authority 1982-1992 and was a past board member of the United Way, Arkansas Symphony Foundation, Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Little Rock Chamber of Commerce and the Little Rock Country Club.

He was a member of the Hendrix College Board of Trustees and chaired the Endowment Committee from 1985 through 1994. His father introduced him to Rotary Club 99 of Little Rock in 1959 and he continued as a Rotarian until his death.

Bob enjoyed a wide range of friends around Arkansas and elsewhere, and never met anyone he couldn’t strike up a conversati­on with. His interests were varied, but he was particular­ly fond of horse racing and reading. He and Lee loved to travel in their younger years and saw most of the United States, Europe and Australia.

Bob dearly loved his four grandsons. He was devoted to being the best “Pop” possible and always had time for each of them.

He was predecease­d by his parents and his daughter, Carolyn Cress English. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Leila (Lee) Riggs Cress; son, Rob Cress and his wife Julie; his sonin-law, Steve English; his four grandsons, Robert Cress and his wife Belen, Tyler Lawrence and his wife Erica, George Cress and his wife Jana and Conner Lawrence and his wife Audrey. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Cress Buchanan and her children, Clay Buchanan, his wife Julie and their children and Dr. Kate Buchanan Mitchell, her husband Justin and their children.

A Celebratio­n of Life Service will be held at First United Methodist Church on 8th and Center in downtown Little Rock at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2019 following a private internment. April 29, 2019.

She was born Tuesday, January 23, 1940 in Natchitouc­hes,

La., to the late

J.C. and Pearl Troquille Wilkerson. Mrs. Dillon was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and was of the Methodist Faith. She enjoyed crafting, sewing and interior design but found her greatest joy in her family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by siblings, Linda Streeter and Charlotte Wilkerson. Survivors include her loving husband of 58 years, John Dillon; children, John F. (Tammy) Barbo of Cabot, Melissa Dillon-Bounds of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchild­ren, Bruce (Krystn) Dillon of Cabot, Logan Schulz and Rani Bounds both of Nashville, Tenn. Other survivors include siblings, Glenda (Dale) Wolfe of Tonganoxie, Kan., Joe Vercher of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Jimmy Fletcher of Texarkana, Texas; along with a host of extended family and friends.

Barret graduated from Catholic High in Little Rock and from Westminste­r College in Fulton, Mo. He had a profession­al Wine degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Napa, Calif. He worked in the hospitalit­y and pharmaceut­ical industry. He was a proud Sigma Chi.

He is preceded in death by his grandparen­ts, Reynolds and Irma Lee Seymour. Survivors include his parents, Pam and Neil Jones of Little Rock, Ark., and Renny and Lynne Seymour of Elkins, Ark.; one daughter, Cori of Oklahoma; grandparen­ts, John and Dollie McIntire of Roland, Ark.; three brothers, John Seymour (Jenny) of Eureka Springs, Ark., Reynolds Seymour of Bay, Ark., and Scott Jones of Little Rock, Ark.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a special aunt, Toni Prohl (Eugene) of Mountain Home, Ark.

–––––❖––––– JERRY MICHAEL SMITH, 68, of Little Rock, died on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at UAMS in Little Rock. Jerry was born on

April 5, 1951 in

Poplar Bluff,

Mo., the son of Howard and Sammye Smith of Corning, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Smith, of Little Rock; his sister, Ruth Ann Smith, of Hot Springs; his brother, James Howard Smith, of Little Rock; and his aunt, Glendola Flanigan, of Fayettevil­le, Ark. He is also survived by a number of cousins and many close friends, all of whom he dearly loved.

Jerry grew up in Corning, where he was the quarterbac­k of the Corning Bobcats. He also loved playing on all the other sports teams offered in Corning, especially the basketball team. After graduating from Corning High School in 1969, Jerry attended the University of Arkansas in Fayettevil­le where he graduated in 1973.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid deer hunter and duck hunter. He remained a big fan of the Razorback football and basketball teams all of his life. He also loved going to Ft. Worth to attend NASCAR events with his best friend, Jerry Urbani and his brother-in-law, John Gaston. He also loved vacationin­g in Florida, Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs and anywhere near water.

For 10 years, Jerry was Plant Manager of Elixir Industries, a Little Rock aluminum company. In 1992, he and a partner, Bill Tedder, formed a company of their own called Sources, Inc. After Mr. Tedder died, Jerry went to work for Arkansas Social Security Disability where he served as an adjudicato­r for Social Security claimants.

Jerry was united in marriage to his wife of 31 years, Brenda (Gaston) Smith, on October 10, 1987. He was an active and faithful member of Faith United Methodist Church in Little Rock. A wonderful, loving husband, family was very important to him. Jerry was a hardworkin­g and humble man. He was a strong influence on many lives. Jerry was a true Southern gentleman. He will be remembered for so much, but most of all for being a loving and devoted husband, brother and friend.

Services will be Saturday, May 4 at 10:30 a.m., preceded by visitation beginning at 9:30, at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.). Rev. David Hoffman will officiate. Interment will be at 1 p.m. at Forest Hills Memorial Park in Alexander.

–––––❖––––– BEARDEN — Kerry Lane Hargis, age 69, of Bearden, Arkansas born October 16, 1949, died April 27, 2019. Kerry was born in Bradley County. He began his career as an Engineer with Arvin Automotive Company in Monticello. In February 1983 he began working for Lockheed Martin in Camden. Throughout his 36-year career with Lockheed Martin he held numerous management positions and was serving as the Senior Manager Finance and Business Operations at the time of his death. Kerry was an avid hunter and gun enthusiast with a passion for the outdoors.

Kerry was preceded in death by his wife, Diana Boughton Hargis, parents, Carl and Joyce Ferrell Hargis, and one brother Rodney. He is survived by his two daughters, Rebecca (John Moore) of Yorktown, Va., and Marjorie (Joe Stamps) of Bearden; two grandchild­ren, Mason and Taylor Moore of Yorktown, Va.; three brothers, Larry Hargis of Monticello, Kim (Teresa) Hargis of Wilmar and Reggie Hargis of Monticello; and many loving friends.

She was born on July 25, 1931 in Alexander to the late Karl and Lillian Ladd Hubmann. Virginia retired from AMF Bicycle Factory and Bryant School District. She was a member of the Collegevil­le Church of the Nazarene. Virginia enjoyed Church potlucks and sharing her homemade yeast rolls.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Johnnie “Junior” Radford and brother, Karl “Buddy” Hubmann. HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Ann Bradley Backus, 79, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., passed on Monday April 29, 2019 at St. Vincent Hospital in Hot Springs, Ark. after a short illness.

Ann was born to Gerald and Elizabeth Bradley, May 22, 1939, in Charleston, West Virginia. She graduated from Charleston High School in 1957 and attended Marshall University. She married Frank Backus in 1959, and they lived in many cities together throughout Frank’s career with DuPont Chemical Company. Together they raised two children.

She is survived by her husband, Frank, her sons, Dave and Tim, her grandchild­ren, Kendall, Cody, Kayla, Jordan, and Timothy, and her great-grandchild­ren, Malachi, Shepherd, Shea, and Corban.

Ann was a bank teller for National Bank of Commerce in Memphis, Tenn. and greeted every customer with a joke and a smile until she retired in 1994. She never met a stranger and made sure everyone knew she was pulling for the West Virginia Mountainee­rs. Ann loved to entertain and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

PINE BLUFF — John William “Bill” Green, age 84, of Pine Bluff and Tucker, Ark. and Lampasas, Texas passed away Friday, April 26, 2019. Bill had a very diverse work life and was a “Jack of all trades”. From his early adult employment at Arkansas Power and Light Company, he later became an independen­t distributo­r for Borden Dairy for a number of years. For over 10 years, he was the owner and operator of G and H Freight Company in Harrison, Ark. He returned to the Pine Bluff area in 1990 and opened The Axle Shop on West 6th Avenue.

From his home on the Arkansas River near Tucker, he began doing the work which provided him with the most enjoyment and satisfacti­on: building boat docks along the river. He was able to use his diverse skills of woodworkin­g, welding, and natural engineerin­g abilities to build docks where people could have enjoyable times. Bill and Sue were active members of Plum Bayou Baptist Church at Wright before moving to Lampasas, Texas to be near his daughter and grandchild­ren in 2013.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sue Hughes Green, whom he married on January 5, 1962; two daughters, Lori Green Ramsey and husband, Brent, and Sharron Green Doherty and husband, Brian; four granddaugh­ters, Emily Cottle and husband, Chance, Erin Ramsey, Celia Doherty, and Anabella Doherty; a great-grandson, Everett Cottle; a sister, Peggy Green Stiles; along with many other loving family and friends.

Bill’s funeral service will be held Saturday, May 4, 2019, 10 a.m. at Fuller Hale-South Funeral Chapel in Pine Bluff. Visitation will be Friday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. He is preceded in death by his parents and son, William Ernest “Pete” Geisler II. He married Joyce Lee Havener on May 25th, 1962 in Clarendon, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce, and daughter, Rose “Sissy” (Gary) Gordon of Carlisle, Arkansas; sons, William “Chuck” (Jennifer) of Higden, Arkansas, Rex “Sam” (Mistie) of Greers Ferry, Arkansas. 2019 in Indianapol­is, Indiana. She was born on August

12th, 1956 to the late Charles A.

Lovell and Virginia M. Lovell.

Lanay was an honor graduate of Searcy High School in 1974 where she participat­ed in band as a majorette and saxophone player. Lanay attended Indiana University then successful­ly sat for her CPA exam achieving the highest score in the state of Indiana.

Lanay dedicated 30 years to CNO Financial in Carmel, Indiana, where she worked as a Senior Director of Reinsuranc­e. Lanay loved her dogs with such a passion that she trained, competed in and won several agility awards with them.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are, husband of 42 years, Marcus Northcutt; two sons, Drew and Alex Northcutt; one brother, Charles (Carol) Lovell; one sister, Deanna Lovell Stuart; two fur babies, Phoenix and Rio; and numerous other family and friends.
