Anti-Aging Dentistry

Q.

Dr. Garner, I wanted to say that I enjoy reading your articles. The before and after photos on your web site are amazing, and I especially enjoyed the Dateline NBC fea- ture. Wow! Incredible transformation! Here’s my problem. I’m 63 years old, and although I’ve always gone to the dentist, and I’ve always taken good care of my teeth, they are rapidly wearing down, getting shorter and shorter, and more painful to temperature. My dentist made me a protective mouthpiece a couple years ago, but he said it’s only a Band-Aid to sleep in, and a temporary fix. My enamel is very soft and my teeth are getting very short. All of them. My back teeth are flat as a pancake and my front teeth are short and stubby, and they have rapidly turned darker and more yellow than ever. I can’t bleach them with strips as the whitening strips cause me pain, and they don’t work anyway. Also, my jaws ache, and I get tension headaches all the time now when I don’t wear my appliance. I was at the salon getting my hair cut and colored and a lady there was talking about the smile makeover she had done in just two visits. She had all of her teeth restored at once. After she left, everyone who knew her started talking about how much younger she looked after her teeth were fixed . She had an amazing, youthful smile, and it was so natural and pretty...full and white, but not too white. I asked who her dentist, was and they said you. That did not surprise me! I want to see you ASAP. I will NOT end up in dentures! I look 73 in the face rather than 63, and it’s not because of wrinkles...it’s my teeth that are aging my face. Something has to be done, and I know of your great reputation and I’ve now have seen your work in person. When can I come in for consultation? I’m ready to move forward as I don’t want this old aging smile any longer. Most sincerely.

A.

Please come in for consultation immediately. If your teeth have worn down like you describe, then we need to act quickly and proactively to restore you mouth before it becomes necessary to do multiple root canals to save teeth. If we can avoid the extra expense of root canal therapy with the endodontist (root canal dentist) and keep your existing teeth vital, we should. It is amazing how much younger my patient’s faces look after they’ve had their dentistry. Cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry often yields a more dramatic anti-aging result than even a facelift or other cosmetic/plastic surgeries. If the teeth/smile look old, the face looks old. It’s that simple. We will keep you out of dentures and give you a gorgeous new smile. I look forward to visiting with you in person about your concerns in the very near future. Thanks for writing.
