NANCY LYNN LEDBETTER, age 61, left this life June 24, 2019, at her home in Little Rock, Ark.

She was born September 2, 1957, in Quincy, Ill., to Keith Randolph Straley and Helen Cudney Straley. She graduated from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville with a B.A. in English in 1979, and earned a M.B.A. from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1983.

Nancy devoted her career to public service, working as an instructor, researcher, and administrator at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She later became Chief of Communications at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, at the time the highest position ever occupied by a woman in the agency. She spearheaded the AGFC license plate project and the AGFC 100th Anniversary project before retiring in 2017. She was incredibly proud of that award winning team and the impactful work they did together.

Nancy was committed to the community and served on the board of the Hillcrest Resident’s Association, in support of her beloved neighborhood. She was involved in countless political issues and campaigns through the years. She was proud to be one of the founders of Little Rock’s first dog park and the annual dog swim at War Memorial. She was a faithful friend to the animals — she’d always turn around to pick up a dog on the side of the road, no matter where she was headed.

Nancy was a “bon vivant” who celebrated life every day and loved to travel, always planning the next adventure, in meticulous detail. She took great pleasure in sharing her books, her recipes, starts from her garden, a favorite wine or new restaurant. A competitive swimmer in high school, she was in or on the water throughout her entire life: windsurfing, sailing, skiing, paddling or just enjoying her “Life on the Lake.” Whether she was biking, hiking, in the yoga studio, or on her daily walks, she crafted her life carefully, she lived it deliberately, and she purposefully spent her time with the people she loved most.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents and her uncle, Louis Clark Straley of Los Angles, Calif. She is survived by her partner, Dr. Douglas Layman, of Lynchburg, Tenn., his family, many cousins, and Hank, her loyal rescue puppy.

Nancy is also survived by her family of devoted friends, along with their children and grandchildren, many of whom knew her as “Aunt Nancy” or “Little Nancy.” She loved not only by word, but in deed and if Nancy loved you, you knew it! She will be dearly missed by all in Little Rock, Lynchburg and elsewhere.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 13, 2019, from 2-3 p.m., at Hillcrest Hall, 1501 Kavanaugh Blvd, Little Rock. She was also a frequent guest on the popular Bob Burns radio show in California where she was presented as his “cousin” from Arkansas. When her parents decided that show business was no life for a child, she returned to Fort Smith, Ark., where she attended Peabody Elementary, Darby Junior High, and Fort Smith High School (now Northside) and was a member of Delta Beta Sigma Sorority. She received her higher education at Sullins College (Bristol, Virginia), Arkansas State Teachers’ College (now UCA), and Texas State University (San Marcos, Texas).

She was past president of the Little Rock Women’s City Club where she developed many treasured friendships. When she reached retirement age, she and her husband moved to Mexico where she sold real estate to North American clients, acted as chaplain for the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and actively participated in American Legion Post #7 in Chapala, Mexico. GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Mary Eunice Barrett Dunn, 93, of Germantown, Tenn., was called home by her Lord Thursday, July 4th, 2019. She was born July 26th, 1925, near Bono, Ark., and delivered into this world by her Uncle, Dr. Reuben Barrett. She was preceded in death by her parents Marzee Cate Barrett and Sophia Emma Mengers Barrett; her husband of 48 years Mace Allen Dunn; a son James Allen Dunn; her sister Sarah Martha Barrett Watkins; and her brother Monroe Cate Barrett. She is survived by one son, Robert Monroe (Bobby) Dunn and wife Vickie of Germantown, Tenn.; a granddaughter Sarah Katherine (Katie) Dunn also of Germantown; a niece Jane Barrett of Clarksville, Ark.; a nephew Charles (Chuck) Barrett and wife Ginger of Shalimar, Fla.; along with a host of cousins and friends.

Mary Eunice (as she was called at home) was born into a family with 2 hardworking and loving parents who possessed strong Christian values, and an older sister Sarah who was 4. She began her education at Herman School northwest of Jonesboro, Ark., just as the Great Depression began to take hold all across America. Growing up in this environment, in this time, in rural Arkansas imprinted her and made her tough, hard-working, efficient, and resourceful her entire life. It also gave her a heart for helping others. Mary completed her secondary education at Arkansas State College (now ASU) Training School where she graduated from high school in the spring of 1943 at the age of 17. She enrolled in the fall of that year at the University of Arkansas and graduated in 1946 with a BSHE Degree. While in school at the university, she also met her husband, Mace. Mary earned her MS Degree in Food Nutrition also from the U of A in 1968.

She worked most of her career for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service as an Extension Home Economist. In 1969 Mary was awarded the Order of Merit, which is the highest honor given in her profession. Mary’s adult life was focused around caring for her family, church work, and volunteering. Her chosen career was one of service to others. As an educator, she positively impacted and improved the lives of hundreds of people throughout rural Arkansas. As a retiree, she volunteered with the NARFE Tax Assistance Program in both Arkansas and Tennessee for over 30 years.

Mary was a lifelong Christ follower and a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Germantown, Tenn., and previously a member of 1st Presbyterian Church of Ozark, Ark. She was one of the first women Elders of the church in Ozark and President of the Women’s Circle there.

Mary retired from the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in 1983. This allowed her to dedicate more time to her church and family and do something she had always wanted to do…. … see the world. Over the next 20 years, she visited 20 different foreign countries on five continents. From climbing Ayer’s Rock to sailing the Nile, she didn’t let retirement slow her down.

After residing in Ozark, Ark., for 43 years, Mary moved to Germantown, Tenn., in 2005 to be near her granddaughter Katie. She was the first resident of Germantown Plantation Senior Living Community and knew everyone there and something about them. The last year and a half of her life she lived in the care of Trezevant Manor (Allen Morgan Unit). Every day of her life through the very end, she calmly faced every change in circumstance with grace and fortitude, trusting in God’s plan.

Services will be Tuesday, July 9th, at Shaffer Funeral Home, 2315 W. Commercial St., in Ozark, Ark., with visitation at 4 p.m., funeral at 5 p.m. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery in Ozark immediately following the service. Pallbearers are Steven Stewart, Rex Anderson, Billy Dunahoo, Don Farris, Jeff Farris, and Gary McElroy. Honorary pallbearers are Frank Thomas, Steve Farris.

There will also be a Memorial Service at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10th, at Faith Presbyterian Church, 8816 Poplar Pike, Germantown, Tenn.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to benefit the mission work of 1st Presbyterian Church of Ozark, Ark., or Faith Presbyterian Church in Germantown, Tenn., or the charity of your choice.
