Seven strokes behind Goosen at the start of the day, Parel birdied two of the last three holes — holing a 30-footer on the par-4 18th — for 3-under 67 and a one-stroke lead over Goosen at Firestone Country Club. Goosen followed his opening rounds of 69 and 62 with a 75. Parel had a 5-under 205 total. Steve Stricker (73), Kent Jones (70) and Brandt Jobe (73) were 3 under. Former No. 1 Justin Thomas was eight shots off the pace following a 70, while Rory McIlroy was a shot further back after a 68 which included four birdies in five holes from the fifth but also three bogeys.

BASEBALL Red Sox get Cashner

The Boston Red Sox have upgraded their starting rotation by obtaining right-hander Andrew Cashner in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles. The deal was announced Saturday after Baltimore beat Tampa Bay 2-1 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. The Red Sox also got cash while sending two 17-year-old prospects to the Orioles. Cashner is 9-3 with a 3.83 ERA in 17 starts for the team with the worst record in the majors. He has gone at least 6 innings in his last 5 starts and has a 1.41 ERA since the beginning of June. Cashner, 32, goes from the rebuilding Orioles to the defending World Series champion Red Sox, who are striving to get back into the postseason after getting off to a poor start. Boston began the day far back of American League East-leading New York but in the thick of the wild-card race. The trade came less than three weeks before the July 31 trade deadline. Cashner is in the final season of a two-year, $16 million contract. The Orioles received infielder Noelberth Romero and outfielder Elio Prado.

Scherzer on 10-day IL

The Washington Nationals have put Max Scherzer on the 10-day injury list because the ace righthander has a mid-back strain. An MRI on Scherzer’s back came back negative, and the three-time Cy Young Award winner had his start pushed back from today to Tuesday. But he was placed on the injury list retroactive to July 10 after throwing a bullpen session before Saturday’s game. Catcher Spencer Kieboom was recalled from Class AA Harrisburg to take Scherzer’s roster spot. Scherzer was 7-0 with a 0.84 ERA in his last nine starts before the All-Star break. He is 9-5 with a 2.30 ERA overall.

Former three-time All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp has been released by the New York Mets. Kemp, 34, made the National League All-Star team last season in his second stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers, finishing with a .290 batting average, 21 home runs and 85 RBI. He was traded to Cincinnati in the offseason as part of a deal with Yasiel Puig and appeared in 20 games for the Reds this season, hitting .200 with 1 home run and 5 RBI before sustaining a broken rib after colliding into the outfield wall during a game in San Diego on April 21. Kemp is a career .285 hitter with 281 home runs and 1,010 RBI in 14 seasons. He was the NL MVP runner-up in 2011 and a two-time Gold Glove winner.

BASKETBALL Cleveland St. fires coach

Dennis Felton’s stay at Cleveland State was short and anything but sweet. Felton was fired Friday after just two seasons with the program, which hasn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2009. Felton, 56, and his entire staff were let go by Athletic Director Scott Garrett. “Our coaches operate with the expectation that they should build a culture supportive of our student-athletes in the classroom, accountable for their conduct as representatives of the university, and for their performance on the court,” Garrett said in a news release. “We will seek a new leader for our program who can deliver on this commitment.” Felton, who replaced Gary Waters in 2017, went 22-44 in his two seasons. He previously coached at Western Kentucky and Georgia. Cleveland State’s program has struggled in recent years, going 40-89 over the past four. The Vikings went just 5-13 in the Horizon League last season. The school said former Vikings player and broadcast analyst Pat Vuyanich will serve as a special assistant for the program until a coach is hired.

New committee leader

Kentucky Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart has been selected to lead the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. It was announced Friday that Barnhart would work with committee chairman Kevin White, Duke’s athletic director, during the upcoming season before succeeding him in the 2020-21 season. Barnhart said being asked to serve in the role by his colleagues on the committee is one of the highest honors he has received. The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee is in charge of selecting, seeding and bracketing schools each year for the NCAA Tournament.
