Former Walmart senior executive and author Celia Swanson waxed eloquent on the subject of relational capital during an Aug. 2 luncheon that was part of the three-day Arkansas Capital Campaign Conference held at Little Rock’s Robinson Center and spearheaded by Dana Dossett, director of community programs for the city of Little Rock.

The event was geared toward founders, staff, board members and supporters of “nonprofit/for purpose” organizations — youth development entities, faith-based organizations, prison re-entry programs, homeless-aid groups “and professionals who want to network with other progressive people.” The conference included seminars on six forms of capital — intellectual, social, material, financial, natural and human — as well as “Real Talk” discussions with industry leaders. These leaders included Swanson, noted for being the first female executive vice president of Walmart Inc. She retired from the company in 2016.

The luncheon took place in the William Grant Still ballroom of the center. As attendees partook of their meal, journalist Deborah Robinson interviewed Swanson onstage on the subject “Real Talk About Real Partnerships: How to Generate Social Impact.” Swanson is author of Gracious and Strong: How to Rise Above the Unexpected Left Turns of Life and Leadership, a book from which Robinson drew for the interview. A human resources professional by trade, Swanson spoke about going into Sam’s Club and distinguishing herself by sharing her unique point of view; building relationships and partnerships; helping to make women’s voices heard; and showing up as her “authentic self.” She shared tips for attendees hoping to partner and build relationships with others for the fulfillment of their organizations’ missions.

After the interview, Swanson signed copies of her book.
