Top-seeded defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain advanced to the Rogers Cup final when Gael Monfils of France withdrew before their semifinal match Saturday night in Montreal. Nadal will face eighth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, a 6-1, 7-6 (6) winner over sixth-seeded Karen Khachanov. Monfils, seeded 16th, outlasted 10th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (2) in a match suspended Friday night because of lightning. AUTO RACING Hill wins truck race

Austin Hill won his second race of the year in the NASCAR Truck Series, holding off Sheldon Creed to win at Michigan International Speedway. The playoffs begin Thursday at Bristol Motor Speedway with Brett Moffitt, Grant Enfinger, Stewart Friesen, Ross Chastain, Hill, Johnny Sauter and Tyler Ankrum. Creed and Tyler Dippel followed Hill, leaving them out of the eight-driver field. Both had a shot to earn a spot in the playoffs with a win at MIS. Enfinger finished seventh in the Corrigan Oil 200, sealing the regular-season championship. Hill was out front when the race resumed with two laps left following a nine-car crash and didn’t relinquish the lead. His first win this year was in the season-opening race at Daytona.

FOOTBALL Cards release Philon

The Arizona Cardinals have released defensive end Darius Philon, a day after Maricopa County jail records indicate he was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly instrument. The Cardinals announced the move Saturday in a one-sentence statement. A Phoenix police spokeswoman, Sgt. Maggie Cox, confirmed Saturday that Philon had been arrested, but declined to provide further information, referring a reporter to court documents that were not immediately available Saturday. According to TMZ, Philon was taken to a Maricopa County jail Friday on charges from an incident in May outside a Phoenix-area strip club. A court video of Philon’s initial court appearance posted by KPNX-TV showed that a judge set bond for Philon and imposed conditions that included allowing Philon to travel out of state for work. Phillip Noland, an attorney who represented Philon during the brief court appearance, did not immediately respond to a request by The Associated Press for comment.

Lions sign QB Johnson

The Detroit Lions signed freeagent quarterback Josh Johnson to a one-year deal Saturday after quarterback Tom Savage suffered an apparent concussion in Thursday’s preseason-opening loss to the New England Patriots. Savage’s status for this week’s practices and game against the Houston Texans is uncertain, but given his history with brain injuries — he finished the 2017 season on injured reserve because of a concussion — the Lions are likely to tread carefully with the man they signed to be Matthew Stafford’s backup. Johnson, 33, made three starts for Washington late last season and went 1-2 in those appearances. A fifth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2008 draft, Johnson has played for 12 other teams in his NFL career and spent part of the 2017 season with the Texans. In Houston, he backed up Savage for part of the season and played for current Lions quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan.

Casey passes physical

Four-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jurrell Casey has passed his physical after starting the Tennessee Titans’ training camp on the physically unable to perform list. Casey, a Pro Bowl lineman each of the past four seasons, was placed on injured reserve after hurting a knee Dec. 22 in the fourth quarter of a 25-16 victory over Washington. He led the Titans with seven sacks and 50 quarterback pressures last season. The Titans also waived wide receiver Jalen Tolliver, along with linebacker Riley Bullough and offensive tackle Cody Conway, who were both hurt Thursday night in their 27-10 exhibition win at Philadelphia.

Tide’s Sanders out

Alabama Coach Nick Saban said freshman running back Trey Sanders is “out indefinitely” with a foot injury. Saban said Saturday the injury will require surgery. He did not provide further details. Sanders was rated the nation’s No. 6 overall prospect and top running back in the 247Sports composite rankings. He was likely to contend for playing time behind Najee Harris, with Brian Robinson also returning to the backfield. Depth could become an issue for the Crimson Tide, which had to replace leading rusher Damien Harris and firstround NFL Draft pick Josh Jacobs. Alabama also has freshman running back Keilan Robinson and redshirt freshman Jerome Ford.

DB Huggins dismissed

Florida defensive back John Huggins has been dismissed from the football program. A team spokesman declined to say what prompted the sophomore’s dismissal. Huggins had missed all of preseason camp while dealing with what the Gators called a “family issue.” According to a police report released last week, a 19-year-old University of Florida student accused Huggins of choking her during a tutoring session last October. Huggins was upset because the tutor took his phone in hopes of ensuring he would stay for the entire session, the report said. The woman had previously been uncomfortable because Huggins pulled her hair in another session, the report said. She did not pursue a criminal case, and no charges were filed from the battery complaint. Coach Dan Mullen said Tuesday that Huggins was punished; he missed five games following the incident and is currently enrolled at the school. The latest police report meant three of Mullen’s players and one of his assistants have been named in incidents involving violence against women in a span of seven months. No charges were filed in any of those cases. Three of the four men have since left the program, and Huggins likely will follow them out the door. Quarterback Jalon Jones, defensive back Brian Edwards and assistant director of player personnel Otis Yelverton have left the program following incidents involving accusations of violence or threats of violence against women. Huggins was one of the team’s breakout players during spring practice.
