BENTONVILL­E — The capacity of the ice plant of the Bentonvill­e Ice and Cold Storage Company will be trebled within a few months. The manager, M.Y. King, is planning to install the additional machinery and equipment as soon as it is received. The increased demand for ice resulted from the growth of the apple business.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 29, 1969

■ Universal Telephone Company of Milwaukee has talked to Harlan Lane of Little Rock about the possibilit­y of buying the controllin­g interest in Union National Bank, it was reported Sunday. An official of the Wisconsin firm said representa­tives of his company had met last week with Lane, who was ousted as president of the bank in October, to discuss the possibilit­y of buying the stock.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 29, 1994

■ President Clinton will fly to Arkansas on Monday, White House officials confirmed Wednesday. Few other details of the president’s trip were provided. Clinton’s three-day trip to the state will consist mostly of recreation­al activities and private visits with friends, the officials said. The only scheduled event is the Wednesday morning dedication of a school named in his honor.

■ Steve Baxter, a candidate for North Little Rock alderman in the last general election, applied Monday for the council seat vacated by former Alderman Cary Gaines. Baxter is the second applicant for the Ward 3 position. Bill Yeates, owner of My Friends Place bar and grill, filed paperwork last week.
