An expulsion merited

-

John Brummett, with whom I must admit I rarely see eye-to-eye, has recently (albeit with his normal amount of anti-Trump vitriol) made a reasonable case for impeachment. I will confess that I am not yet convinced, but I am open to persuasion should the evidence warrant it. And the best evidence for removing an elected official from office that I’ve yet seen came this past Sunday in his thoughtful piece titled “Tired political charades.”

Mr. Brummett clearly states what should be obvious to us all, that “Democrats never considered that impeachment would bring Trump down, so they have designed this process purely for hoped-for political and electoral advantage.” The key Democrats in this case of course being Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler. The objective of this not-so-secret cabal is to, again quoting Mr. Brummett, “build a case damning enough to Trump—in the impeachment articles and in the public square—to cause direct political damage to him and his re-election chances while also causing residual damage to Republicans.” We also all know from their own and other Democrats’ unambiguous and practically gleeful statements recently and extending all the way back to Trump’s election that this has been their objective all along, evidence be damned. Now if that isn’t abuse of power for political gain, I don’t know what is.

Senators and representatives cannot be impeached under our Constitution, but thankfully that document does provide for their expulsion. I’m sure that with this new evidence the expulsion of our own Gang of Four will immediately be taken up by the Senate and House with the same enthusiasm and vigor the Democrats in the House have displayed during Trump’s impeachment. But I’m not holding my breath.
