CONWAY — The Central Arkansas Bears surprised themselves Saturday night by winning a game at the free-throw line. UCA (11-6, 4-2 Gulf South Conference) made enough free throws to hold off Mississippi College, 67-65, at the Farris Center. The Bears made 18 of 32 from the line (56 percent), but still beat the Choctaws’ 11 of 25 (44 percent). “There’s no doubt about it that the difference in the ballgame was they shot poorly from the line,” UCA Coach Arch Jones said, “even more poorly than we did. We knew coming in that they weren’t a very good free-throw shooting team. In fact, I think it’s the only team in the league that shoots free throws worse than we do.” Mississippi College (10-7, 3-3) trailed 67-65 after UCA freshman Lee Stuart made 1 of 2 from the line with :11 left.

■ U.S. District Judge Brian S. Miller on Thursday questioned how schools and teachers can overcome a black-white student academic achievement gap without making a change in the homes of the low-achieving students who are oftentimes black. “It seems closing the gap between black and white or middle class and poor kids is very difficult,” Miller said on the fourth day of a federal court hearing on whether the North Little Rock School District has complied with its desegregation plan and can be released from years of federal court supervision. If the district is declared desegregated or unitary by the judge, it would no longer be subject to federal court monitoring of its staffing practices and the condition of its buildings. It would also no longer be monitored for its special education, gifted education, compensatory education and dropout prevention programs.
