ARKADELPHIA — Clark county is on the verge of catching the oil fever which is raging in neighboring counties. Nearly every day oil experts arrive and secretly confer with local oil “bugs.” Mayor J.J. Kress and J.E. Reagan have been investigating some of their holdings not far from here, and out of town oil men say the properties look very favorable. A contract has been awarded by M.W. Greeson and associates of Prescott to the Shaw Syndicate for the drilling of two wells in the southwest part of the county, one west and one east of Gurdon. Geologists have not yet named the exact locations.

CONWAY — In the span of two games, the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears went from fourth place to second in the Gulf South West Division. The second step in the process was a 70-61 victory over perennial power Delta State on Monday night at the Farris Center. A balanced scoring attack, led by forward Gina Starkey with 18 points, and a man-to-man press defense helped the Sugar Bears improve to 14-6 overall, 6-2 in the West. UCA is two games behind division leader Henderson State with two head-to-head games later this month. “Henderson is still unbeaten,” UCA Coach Ron Marvel said. “But we’re two games back, and we still have to play them twice. As long as we’re in that position, I feel pretty good about it.” UCA unveiled a new wrinkle defensively that seemed to catch the Lady Statesmen (11-6, 5-3) by surprise.

■ Downtown Little Rock used to be the place to go for shopping but in recent years residents have had a hard time finding basic services among the office buildings, bars and condominiums. Now two pharmacies are looking to downtown as a business opportunity. USA Drug has plans for a store at 17th and Main Street in the South Main neighborhood, and River Market Tower owners announced last week a summer opening for Green Earth Pharmacy and Wellness Center in the River Market district.
