Artmobile stopping at Jacksonville High
The Arkansas Arts Center Artmobile will roll onto the Jacksonville High School campus this week with an exhibition of America-themed works.
The artmobile will be in the parking lot behind Jacksonville High School.
Students who attend schools throughout the district will be able to tour the exhibit all week. An educator will be on hand to guide viewers through their exploration of the artworks.
The public is invited to see the exhibit from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Spirit of Independence, the Arkansas Arts Center Artmobile’s 2019-20 traveling exhibition, asks the question “What does independence mean to you?”
Much of the exhibit is built around the Lorillard Corp.’s 1974-75 commission of 12 American artists to create new works to celebrate America’s bicentennial anniversary in 1976.
The artists were selected on the basis of their status in the art world, high creative standards, and diverse styles and concepts.
The featured artists are Will Barnet, Colleen Browning, Audrey Flack, Red Grooms, Joseph Hirsch, Robert Indiana, Alex Katz, Jacob Lawrence, Marisol Escobar, Larry Rivers, Ed Ruscha and Fritz Scholder.
Each artist was free to choose the subject and media for their piece.
The artmobile exhibition features many of these prints along with other American-themed artworks intended to prompt discussion on American history as captured in a range of media by a diverse group of artists.
The Arkansas Arts Center Artmobile is sponsored by Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corp.; Bank of America; Entergy Arkansas Inc.; Ginanne Graves Long; HoganTaylor LLP; Kum & Go; and Union Pacific Foundation.
