Arkansas Achievers
▪ Rehnuma Seheli, a business information systems graduate student at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been selected as one of the 10 nationwide winners of a $5,000 scholarship from Acxiom’s Diversity Scholarship Program. A native of Bangladesh, Seheli completed a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in physics before moving to the U.S. in 2015.
▪ A course taught and designed by Dr. Amar Kanekar, associate professor and graduate coordinator of health education and promotion at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has received the Quality Matters Certification Mark for course design quality. Kanekar is well-known for innovation in online course design and development. In addition to several courses earning the Quality Matters certification, the professor received the 2017-18 Blackboard Exemplary Course Program Award, has been a lecturer for Blackboard’s Innovative Teaching Series, and received a presidential citation for dedicated service and contributions from the National Society for Public Health Education.
▪ A Lyon College professor has been named a Fulbright U.S. scholar. The U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced that Dr. Scott Roulier has received a Fulbright award to Ahmedabad, India, to teach at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology and to research the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project.
Roulier, the David Trimble Sr. Professor of Political Philosophy at Lyon, is one of over 800 U.S. citizens who will teach, conduct research, and/or provide expertise abroad for the 202021 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, as well as record of service and demonstrated leadership in their respective fields. Roulier said “every person’s life is a repository of the kindnesses shown and the investments made by others. I am grateful for my supportive family and friends — and especially my colleagues and students at Lyon College.” While some Fulbright awards focus on teaching or research, Roulier will enter a hybrid program. He will spend about half of his time teaching and the other half researching. Roulier received his Ph.D. in government from the University of Virginia and since 2000 has taught American politics, political theory, and constitutional law at Lyon College. Roulier has been the recipient of a German Academic Exchange Service full grant and, in 2005, was named the Carnegie Endowment/ CASE Arkansas Professor of the Year. The author of numerous peer-reviewed articles, he has also published two books, Kantian Virtue at the Intersection of Politics and Nature (University of Rochester Press, 2004) and Shaping American Democracy: Landscapes and Urban Design (Palgrave, 2018).
He plans to teach two graduate level courses at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology: “The Politics of Urban Spaces” and “Critical Urban Theory.”
