Your Eyelid Problem Could be Your Brows

Q. I have reached an age that gravity has set into my eyelids as well as the rest of me. I want to look refreshed. How can that heaviness in my upper eyelids be taken away?

A. I frequently see patients that come to me for upper eyelid surgery and they usually are concerned about excess skin on the upper eyelids. Many times, however, they don’t realize that the excess skin of the upper eyelids is due to a drooping of the eyebrow. This combination of upper eyelid skin excess and brow ptosis (drooping) is what gives many people that tired look. What people don’t realize is that over time the eyebrows sag like many other parts of our body. We tend to compensate for this by lifting our eyebrows up with the forehead muscles. This constant lifting of the eyebrows then causes the horizontal lines on the forehead. (If you have horizontal forehead lines you probably have some brow drooping). When I see patients for upper eyelid surgery I have them completely relax the forehead muscles to assess the brow position. I am usually quite amazed at how low the brow position really is. When brow position is low then we recommend a combination of brow lift surgery and upper eyelid surgery. Our goal is not to give our patients a “deer in the headlights look” but to stabilization of the upper eyelid surgery as well. You could imagine if I only did surgery on the upper eyelid over time the non-stabilized eyebrow would continue to migrate down towards the upper eyelid and eventually make it look like the patient needed more skin removed from the eyelid. It is important to make the right diagnosis in eyelid surgery for a natural look that is pleasing to the eye.

Hypnosis Will Change Your Life, Whether It Be Weight Loss, Stop Smoking Or Some Other Issue. Hypnosis Is The Answer

Q. What is Hypnosis and how does it work?

A. Even in the educated world of today, the word hypnosis still brings forth feelings of fear and apprehension to many people. They still think a hypnotist can control them or make them tell their innermost personal secrets. Others believe that when they’re in the hypnotic state, they’re unconscious and not aware of what’s happening around them. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth.

Generally speaking these misconceptions are based on Hollywood films or what other people who are ignorant concerning the hypnotic process have told them. When an individual is in the hypnotic state, physically they are deeply relaxed but mentally they’re hundreds of times more alert than when in their normal state of awareness. Their ability to hear what’s going on around them is greatly improved. They’re aware of everything and are active participants in the hypnotic process. It’s impossible to force a suggestion on anybody that they don’t want to have or that they may feel uncomfortable with. Such a suggestion would be instantly rejected and would have no affect on them. Clients are always in control. No suggestion can enter the subconscious mind without them actively supporting and helping to get that suggestion there.

If the suggestion is wanted and beneficial, it is allowed to enter the subconscious mind. Now, the subconscious mind is similar to a computer and must respond to the information placed into it.

All of us are what our subconscious minds perceive just to be. This deep part of us develops its perceptions of who we are based on our everyday experiences in life. If our subconscious mind perceives us to be fat, we become fat. If it perceives us to be a smoker, we smoke. And so on with many other issues and challenges in all areas of our lives. The suggestions received while in hypnosis, if accepted by the individual, will change the subconscious perception of the particular issue being addressed. For example, when an overweight person’s perception at the subconscious level is changed to one of being slim, and trim, that’s the way the person becomes. . .automatically!! If a smoker’s perception at the subconscious level is changed to one of being a non-smoker, he becomes a non-smoker... instantly! The secret to success with hypnosis is simply this; the client must honestly want the change to occur. If the client is being pressured by family members, doctors or others and doesn’t honestly want the change for themselves, they will reject the suggestions and change will not happen. I am merely a guide for the client. If a client wants and accepts my guidance, we then work together as a team to achieve the subconscious perception change necessary for your goal to become a reality. Hypnotism not only works well to stop smoking and to lose weight, but is extremely effective in eliminating phobias, memory and concentration, insomnia, motivation, stress reduction, sales improvement, test anxiety, sports improvement, pain management and just about any issue or challenge you may have in your daily life. Even the American Medical Association has approved hypnosis as a very valuable tool. So now that you’re ready to make the changes you’ve put off for so long, call my office and lets work together to get you back on track. Become a Non Smoker or a Non Dipper.

Men’s Health

Q. As a male approaching 40 who would like to get healthier, are there specific health tips for men that I should know that can help improve my quality of life as I get older? What should I be doing now for my health?

A—It’s smart that you are thinking proactively about your health. While there are overall health tips that work for anyone, men do have their own health needs.

Make sure you have a doctor you are comfortable with and then make sure you go see him/her. We all know that men can put off going to the doctor and don’t like talking about their issues. Change that. Take time to research physicians and commit to at least annual appointments/ physicals. Also, don’t neglect your mental health. Instead of clamming up and trying to push through a period of depression or anxiety on your own, do your health a favor and talk it out with someone. Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep – quality sleep. If you or your partner has noticed an issue with loud snoring or you have experienced irregular breathing while you sleep, don’t put off seeing a doctor about it.

Vary your workouts. Try to do a mix of aerobic activities, muscle training and stretching. Try to incorporate kegel exercises. The humble kegel is a simple exercise that strengthens the pelvic floor muscles to support the bladder and bowel.

Vary your diet as well. Worry less about counting calories and more about eating a balanced diet. Calories alone are actually a poor picture of overall health, especially for active men who burn a lot of energy. Watch your weight, especially around your mid-section. Visceral fat, or fat that collects around your middle, is the deadliest fat form around, and is linked to countless health problems including type 2 diabetes.

Pay attention to your body. You know when things don’t feel right, so make sure you are seeing a doctor when you notice changes. It’s important for you to have a well-rounded check-up that will cover anything from heart issues to prostate to hormones. At Arkansas Urology Men’s Health Clinic, we have a free 10-pt. checkup to cover a variety of issues that men can face.

Embarrassed To Smile

Q. Dr. Garner, I’ve enjoyed reading your article for many years. Just recently, I’ve inherited some money and now want to see a life long dream fulfilled. Most of my life, I’ve been embarrassed to smile. My teeth have been an major issue with me and I feel, their ugly appearance has changed my life in many way. There were 6 of us kids, and I was the oldest. My parents were able to do braces for my youngest sister, but for me, there was just no money to do it. My teeth have spaces or gaps. They are very yellow. I visited with an orthodontist a few days ago, and he told me that at my age, it would be slow and difficult procedure. And, like he said, “when the braces come off eventually, you are still going to have the discoloration and chips to deal with”.

He suggested that I visit with a cosmetic dentist about veneers or bonding... plus he said that most of the giant silver fillings in my jaw teeth are needing crowning. Also, he said there was a lot of wear and cracks throughout. I know I’ve been hard on my teeth, and I love chewing ice. I want to try and come in ASAP for an exam and consultation visit. It’s been awhile since I had my teeth cleaned and I’m fairly new to Arkansas. My lifelong dream is to have a nice smile. I’m so ready!

A. Thanks for writing and please give us a call immediately, and I’ll see you as quickly as possible. Many adults do not want to spend 3 years in braces. Like your orthodontist said, many end up with straight, but ugly teeth that still require cosmetic treatment so it seems to be a waste of time and money. We will look at the entire picture... the structure and foundation of your teeth as well as the aesthetics. Most likely, in just two visits spaced about a week apart, you can have the smile you’ve always wanted plus strong healthy teeth. No longer will you feel embarrassed or afraid to smile. It can be life changing. Nearly every day, a patient will tell me “Dr. Garner, having my teeth done is absolutely the best investment I’ve ever made”. See you soon! We are excited to make your dreams come true.
