Breathtaking spring trends

The new neutrals

- KATIE LAUGHRIDGE TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE

I am a self-professed fabric-fanatic. I love discovering fresh styles at market and the anticipation that comes with waiting (im)patiently to have the new textiles arrive each season. Seeing the patterns and colors gets my mind racing with the thought of the beautiful creations soon to be designed.

Just when I thought nothing would ever top the rich winter plaids I spent the last few months dreaming about, spring styles came and took my breath away. Now that the air has returned to my lungs, I have to share a sneak peek of this season’s new fabrics and some of our favorites that are perfect for everything from throw pillows and duvets to upholstery pieces, window treatments and table toppers.

When it comes to spring trends, two have really jumped out at me. One, the new neutrals, is a mixture of my favorite green hues with greige. Greige is a gorgeous combination of beige and gray that creates a rich color that can work in warm and cool color palettes. Where beige tends to have yellow undertones, and taupe has red or green depending on the warmth, griege has blue undertones that pair perfectly with a variety of hues. Paired up with lovely shades of green (and perhaps some yellow for an extra pop), the combination sings springtime.

Another popular fabric trend this season is the return of blush and pink hues, this time mixed with light and airy seafoam blues. This combination plays with Pantone’s current color of the year, Classic Blue, and gives a nod to the coral-inspired color palettes of 2019. They are transformed into something as fresh and airy as the season itself. I love introducing these brighter and bolder colors to my home in places like trim for my pillows. Trim can be overlooked when creating custom pillows, but as the perfect place for a pop of accent color, it shouldn’t be. Introducing a festive trim to your designs can create a full and luxurious product that stands out on any surface.

The true excitement in a room comes from mixing and matching your favorite prints. These spring trends are available in so many fun and interesting patterns that overlapping them is not only gorgeous, but easy. It might be my love of maximalism, but why choose just one fabric when you can blend your favorites to create a custom look full of depth and texture? I love the freedom of mixing together everything from florals with plaids to stripes with animal print.
