■ Yesterday’s decision of the Arkansas Supreme Court in granting new trials to six of the twelve negroes sentenced to death for participation in the Elaine riots is evidence of the desire of the state’s executive and judicial officials to be fair to the negro. This was the comment of Governor Brough last night. The governor again denounced the action of Governor Allen of Kansas in refusing to extradite Robert Hill, alleged leader of the Elaine rioters, and declared that “politics is not so evident in Arkansas as in Kansas in dealing with the race question.”

JONESBORO — Eleven persons in Arkansas State University’s College of Liberal Arts this year were on the school administration’s final so-called “purge” list that has come to light in the wake of the dismissal of two faculty members. The reasons for dismissal of some teachers, according to the list, range from “taking a dogmatic and partisan stand” to “over-emphasis of atheism.” The list from the College of Liberal Arts, which was submitted to school officials by Dean Philip James, contains little criticism of the actual teaching ability of the 11 instructors.

■ There will be no special election in May for the city of Alexander to vote on detaching part of the town from Pulaski County to place it in Saline County, but Mayor Shirley Johnson said she plans to get the issue on the November ballot. Insufficient paperwork kept the measure off the May ballot. Some of Johnson’s critics have suggested that she’s raising the issue in an election year in an effort to remove an area of the city that wouldn’t favor her. Johnson said Thursday that she is planning to run for re-election, but that’s not why residents should vote on detaching from Alexander.
