Gas station melee leads to LR arrests

- JOSEPH FLAHERTY

Little Rock police made two arrests after a recent brawl at a gas station involving a woman who attempted to run over people with her vehicle, according to arrest reports, and who went into labor and was taken to a hospital.

The incident began when police responded to a residential address on Edwina Drive regarding a burglary in progress. According to the arrest report, police learned that 23-year-old Jayla Sparks of Little Rock was a suspect in the burglary. Additionally according to the report, police learned that at a gas station, Sparks had rammed a person’s car with her own vehicle.

At the same time that police were investigating the alleged burglary, they received a call from Sparks, who said she was going into labor because her boyfriend hit her car with his, according to a separate arrest report.

Police reviewed video at the nearby Shell gas station. The report says the video showed Sparks arriving and parking in front of a Dodge pickup. Her Chrysler hit the pickup and then backed up. The pickup, driven by Myia Jefferson, then rammed Sparks’ Chrysler, apparently

in response.

Sparks then exited her car to assault Jefferson and another witness, according to the report, before getting behind the wheel again and attempting to run over the witness.

Sparks left the scene and was later arrested on Monday and taken to the Pulaski County jail after her release from the hospital, the report says. (It’s unclear based on the arrest report where police arrested Sparks.)

She faces three felony charges — aggravated assault on a family member, aggravated assault and first-degree criminal mischief — plus a misdemeanor charge of third-degree battery.

She did not appear on a Pulaski County jail roster Monday night.

Police also arrested Jefferson, a 30-year-old resident of North Little Rock, around 10:30 p.m. Sunday after she admitted to police that she rammed Sparks’ Chrysler “after the vehicle hit her first,” the report says.

Jefferson faces one felony charge of aggravated assault. She remained in the Pulaski County jail Monday evening with no bail set, according to an online jail roster.
