SHERIDAN — Joe Gene Koon,
88, of Sheridan, Ark., was born August 22, 1931, and died Sunday, April 19, 2020. He was the son of Joseph H. and Ela Koon. He and his wife, Glen, celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary last month.
Mr. Koon was proud to be in the amazing Sheridan Class of ‘49. He went on to graduate from Henderson College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He enjoyed many years as band director at various schools — especially Mabelvale Junior High.
At age 33, he was diagnosed with brain tumors. Surgery effectively removed them but left him impaired in some ways. Still, he accomplished more than his doctors ever dreamed and was able to go back to the band room for a few years before his retirement.
Dementia began almost 30 years ago and slowly took away abilities and function. He never lost his sweetness, his goodness, his integrity or his love for Jesus Christ. He never once complained about his limitations, but lived in a state of thankfulness. He was a blessing to his family and friends and an inspiration for maintaining godliness in the face of adversity.
Mr. Koon was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Ela Koon, and his son, John Koon. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Glen, his son, Aaron Koon (Mary), and daughter, Deborah Howard (Theron). Grandchildren: Scott Schatz (Carrie), Paul Schatz (Leslie), Joseph Koon (Caroline), Izzy Koon, Laura Crawford (Roddy), and Rebekah Koon. He had five great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Heartland Nursing and Rehabilitation (Benton) for the years of care and service they provided for Mr. Koon. Because of the coronavirus, we will not have a funeral service, but a family burial is planned at Lost Creek Cemetery in Sheridan, Ark.
