JAMES BARRY HERBST (78) was born in Port Chester,
New York on June 4, 1942. He peacefully left for heaven as we held him close on the beautiful afternoon of June 11, 2020. The only child of the late George “Barney” Herbst and Mary Elizabeth Halpin. He had a terrific New York City accent and a big city swagger. Jim was the beloved husband and very best friend of Carolyn S. Brodie for the last 34 years. They first saw each other across a crowded room in Dallas, Texas.
He is survived by sons, James Todd Herbst (Caren) of Allen, Texas and Scott Joseph Herbst of Los Angeles, California; their mother, Trish Viafore of Stonington, Conn.; granddaughters, Madeleine and Anna Herbst (Richardson, Texas); brother-inlaw and sister-in-law, Luchen and Lana Walls of England, Ark.; nieces, Kylie Walls Minton (Bart) and Kagan Walls Ness (Austin); nephew, Luke Walls; great-nieces, Olivia, Madison, Kate Henri and Leah Rose, who all called him Bobo; his dachshund companions, Maggie, Gracie and Eli never left his side during his brave six-month fight with cancer. He was preceded in death by his in-laws, George and Sue Brodie of England, Ark.
He was proud and devoted member of the United States Air Force in the 6910th RGM, Darmstadt, Germany and 6989th RSM, Misawa, Japan (1960-64). Throughout the rest of his life, Jim carried with him the discipline learned through service, dedication and hard work.
He attended Iona College in (New Rochelle, N.Y.), The New York State Police Academy in Oneonta, N.Y. and Kent State University (BA and MLIS). He served as a patrolman (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), a New York State Trooper, a Sheriff (Palm Beach, Fla.) and librarian in the Akron-Summit County Public Library for 15 years.
Jim loved that he was a Kent State alumni and closely followed KSU sports. He also watched the stock market, loved old tv and radio shows, travel, eating out, sharing a good story, and keeping up with his US Air Force brothers and sisters, especially those who served in Misawa, Japan.
