Adventure’s potential

-

Let me tell you of a dear friend of mine; let us call him Evan B. Having already lived so much of life early, he sees the potential of adventure in what lies ahead and knows what it feels like to take hold of passing opportunity, like grabbing on to a moving train and being filled with the rush of air and mystery.

Because of this he has a tendency toward the charitable adventurer. He shares freely his experiences with others, always pulling out of them a sense of adventure: the ability to suss hidden trails, intuit scenic campsites next to secret lakes, and appreciate the “backyard nature” of the everyday. Thus, his kindness is realized after you have caught your breath after having trekked, dried off the lake water, and finished smelling the proverbial flower. And because potential is old hat in his characteristic repertoire, he seeks it out in others with such determination, helping them appreciate themselves for reasons they did not know before.

We happened upon each other at a mutual friend’s wedding. We liked similar music and had stories to tell about our pasts. At the time, I saw a world traveler, a wandering soul. He saw the potential for a lasting friendship.

This is to the passers-by we meet, to Evan B.: pursuer of life, encourager of friendship.
