Arkansas postcard past
Eureka Springs (circa 1938): At the former Crescent Hotel, converted to cancer hospital by “Dr.” Norman Baker, “free talking pictures” were offered in what had been the grand ballroom. Baker advertised on radio he had cured patients the Mayo Clinic had given up on. In 1940 his quackery caught up to Baker when the federal government closed down his “hospital.” The building sat vacant for six years before a group of investors bought it and restored it as a grand hotel.
