■ Facing a deadlock in both educational and civic affairs, and with no other means in sight of adjusting differences, both Gardner and Gardner factions of North Little Rock are considering annexation to Little Rock. The proposed annexation, it was said yesterday, would include both the city and the North Little Rock School District. Rumors of annexation have been current in the North Side city for a week, and yesterday leaders of both factions admitted that annexation appeared to be the only permanent solution of the differences.

■ Pulaski County Special School District teachers threatened Wednesday to strike or take other job actions against the school district if teacher salary negotiations with administrators don’t improve. About 200 members of the Pulaski Association of Classroom Teachers met for more than 4 hours at Clinton Magnet Elementary School. The teachers told their negotiating team to resume contracts talks with administrators. But they also authorized PACT President Deen Minton to call a strike or initiate other job actions such as refusing to do required paper work or to supervise students outside their classrooms if the district won’t negotiate in good faith.

■ It has gotten so dry in central Arkansas that driftwood that floated down the Arkansas River and collected in one of the gates of Murray Lock and Dam caught fire Monday morning. The fire broke out shortly before 11 a.m. in Gate 1 of the Arkansas River lock and dam, which is closest to the river’s north shore at Cook’s Landing in North Little Rock, officials said. The lock and dam has 14 gates. A North Little Rock fire boat responding to the fire extinguished the blaze.
