Suffrage celebration

The University of Central Arkansas College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences will host public suffrage singalongs and poetry performances at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. today outdoors in Alumni Circle at UCA, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway.

Earlier in the day, the college will also unveil three art installations, all part of its continuing Suffrage Centennial celebration.

UCA music instructor Jaimee Jensen-McDaniel will host a karaoke-style sing-along of suffrage protest songs with a virtual choir. Text will appear on a large screen on the university’s Old Main building. Also, students will perform poetry that captures the experiences of suffragists, including Gertrude Watkins (1884-1938) and Alice Paul (1885-1977).

From 1:40-2:30 p.m., UCA will unveil :

“Suffrage Rugs” by New York artist Sharon Louden, a ground-covering sculptural installation that incorporates Arkansas-sourced materials including white sand, rock, recycled colored rubber mulch and colored glass. Louden collaborated with six female students on the project, designed to be barrier-free and walked upon.

“United: The Acorn Project” by UCA faculty member Liz Smith, including 3,000 acorns handmade by students and others at UCA and around the state from seven different colors of clay that represent the diversity of the state of Arkansas and arranged to form a large-scale representation of the U.S. flag.

“CitiZINE Project,” pages and enlarged prints from a series of ’zine-making workshops hosted by UCA community outreach coordinator Lesley Graybeal and graphic designer Kristen Spickard for students and community members.

Admission is free and social distancing and mask mandates will be in place; all events will also be available virtually via the college’s Facebook page, facebook.com/cahssuca.
