White Hall plans Christmas fun from a distance

- By Deborah Horn

With the first covid-19 Christmas season comes a few social restrictions and cancellations, such as nixing the annual White Hall Christmas parade.

The traditional sit on Santa’s lap is being replaced by a Santa drive-by, but to brighten the holiday season, the White Hall Chamber of Commerce will host its long-running Stars in the Park.

“We have to work a little harder this year to adjust to covid, but we are thankful for what we have,” Lydia Scholebo, chamber board member, said.

The chamber is also stressing the importance of shopping locally this year.

Usually, it’s an annual indoor event, but the pandemic put a damper on the Christmas cheer, Scholebo said.

Drivers and passengers will remain in their vehicles, and children will be given pre-bagged cookies from a licensed kitchen and a beverage, such as water or a soft drink.

“We’re following CDC guidelines,” Scholebo said.

The event starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m., with vehicles entering at the Dollarway Road driveway and exiting at the Highway 256 driveway.

STARS IN THE PARK

One tradition that will continue this year is the Stars in the Park.

It allows residents to purchase a star for $10 in memory of or in honor of a loved one.

The chamber will be collecting names starting Monday and continuing until Nov. 23. The lights will be turned on Dec. 4.

“The stars will be put on top of three-foot lighted trees,” Scholebo said. “They will be placed inside White Hall City Park, and people are invited to walk by the trees.”

“It’s a wonderful way to remember someone,” even a pet, Scholebo said.

Stars in the Park forms are available at White Hall City Hall at 101 Parkway Drive.
