–––––❖––––– DOUGLAS PHILLIPS HAYNES slipped quietly into eternity Thursday, October 22, 2020. He was a fighter, battling cancer for 32 years.

Doug graduated from North Little Rock Northeast in 1971 and

Hendrix College in 1974. He worked on his master’s degree at the University of Indiana in Bloomingto­n. He taught a class in Linguistic­s at Columbia University in New York City. He was fluent in French and German, and had taught a summer class in German at the University of Arkansas.

Doug worked for Arkansas Blue Cross & Blue Shield for 35 years. He made and has many friends from there. Doug was an avid reader of books and the Bible. He was baptized at First Baptist Church in Scottsburg, Ind., in 1964.

He is survived by his mother, Lelia Phillips Haynes; his sister, Leisa C. House; brother-in-law, Bob House; cousins, Paul Clayton Cooper (Bonnie), Dr. James M. Cooper (Tracie); and several nieces and nephews, including his buddies, great-nephews Brandon and Aiden House.

The family is grateful and owes many thanks to Dr. Joe Buford, Dr. Ronald Kuhn, and Dr. Lawrence Mendelsohn (what a journey it has been). Becky and Pam- you are not forgotten, Doug loved them all. A special thank you to Arkansas Hospice.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Doug will be held Saturday October 31, 2020, at 2 pm., in the pavilion Rest Hills Memorial Park in North Little Rock. Doug’s family and the funeral home urge everyone to use the necessary COVID precaution­s when attending the service. Doug will be laid to rest by his father and his beloved nephew Zachary Lee House.

Doug would say- this is way too much informatio­n girls, but we could write a book.

–––––❖––––– ROBERTO JUNIOR HERNANDEZ, 49, of North Little Rock, passed from this life on October 25, 2020. He was born February 24, 1971, in Chicago, Illinois. He enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family, especially his twin brother.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Angel Machin, and daughter, Stephanie Hernandez.

Survivors include his wife of twenty-seven years, Selina Hernandez; mother, Gladys Hernandez of North Little Rock; children, Joshua Hernandez, Cianna Hernandez, Destiny Hernandez, all North Little Rock; grandchild­ren, Xiomara and Xela Startz, Ramaj and Jaice Connor. Other survivors his twin brother, Carlos Hernandez, twelve other siblings, and a host of extended family and friends.

–––––❖––––– ANTHONY BRIAN KING, 37, of Little Rock, Ark., lost his life on October 27,

2020, in the act of helping a stranger.

As a Christian, he lived the life of a Good Samaritan up to his last moment.

His courage and quick thinking saved at least three lives over the course of his life.

Anthony quickly won over those he met with his clever quips, charm, and down-to-earth personalit­y. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and kayaking. He was an electricia­n and had an extensive collection of rocks, knives, and vintage t-shirts.

Anthony was welcomed into the world on January 13, 1983, by parents Lori Hoggard and Phillip King. He is survived by his mother, Lori Hoggard, and father, Phillip King. He grew up with an older brother, Andrew King (Kristen) of Little Rock, Ark., and younger sister, Aimee Gardner (Todd) of Houston, Texas. He also had three half-brothers, Alexander King of Fayettevil­le, Ark., Israel and Isaac King both of Sherwood, Ark., and half-sister Amalie King of Nashville, Tenn. He had a special place in his heart for his paternal grandmothe­r, Mary Nell King Carter (R.B.), and maternal grandparen­ts, Gary and Patricia Hoggard. He is also survived by his aunt, Julie Carter (Brock); uncle, Rodger King (Kathy); niece, Kennedy; nephews, Anderson and Sullivan; and many cousins and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfathe­r, Ray King, and uncle, Scott Hoggard.

–––––❖––––– FRANK WILLIAM LETZIG, JR., 94, of Little Rock, died October 27, 2020. Frank was born in Little Rock, on November 19, 1925, to Frank William

Letzig and Margaret Himstedt

Letzig. Frank attended Little Rock public schools through the 10th grade and graduated from Little Rock Catholic High

School in 1943.

After graduation and following in the footsteps of his father, who served as a pilot during the First World

War, Frank volunteere­d for the U.S. Army Air Corp, serving as an Aviation Cadet. Frank completed his training as a flight navigator, primarily in the B-24 Liberator, just as World War II concluded. Following the war, Frank attended Washington University in St. Louis, graduating with a BS in industrial engineerin­g. Frank worked for much of his life as an engineer, holding profession­al certificat­ions in Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida and Mississipp­i. Later in life, he attended and graduated from what was then known as the Little Rock Division of the University of Arkansas School of Law, (now the UALR Bowen School of Law) and was admitted to the Arkansas Bar in 1975. After graduating from college, Frank returned to Little Rock, where he met and married the former Charlus Henderson on October 14, 1950. Frank and Charlus had three children: Susan Letzig (Bill) Roehrenbec­k, Charles William (Lynda) Letzig and Diane Letzig (Chuck) McDaniel. Frank and Charlus were both active in the Catholic faith and were charter members of Christ the King Catholic Church in Little Rock. He was also a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a Knight of the Grand Cross, Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. After 59 years of marriage, Charlus passed away in 2010. On June 18, 2011 Frank married Betty Lee White Thornton, whom he had known since his days at Catholic High. Frank and Betty made their home in Little Rock until her death in 2017. In addition to Charlus and Betty, Frank was preceded in death by his parents as well as his only sibling, Margaret Ellen Letzig (“Mel”) Kemp. Frank is survived by his three children, two stepsons, Scott (Becky) Thornton and Lance Thornton, both of Conway, Ark., as well as twelve grandchild­ren, four step-grandchild­ren, fifteen great-grandchild­ren, eight step-great-grandchild­ren, and a special niece, Ellen Kemp Rogers of Paragould, Ark. A private funeral mass and graveside service will be held for family members, with interment at Roselawn Memorial Park. Oct. 30, 1920 BATESVILLE — Lit. B. Dodson, a Scott county farmer who on July 13 shot and killed John E. Branscomb, a neighbor, was acquitted of first degree murder by a jury in Independen­ce county Circuit Court here this morning. The case was given to the jury about 11 o’clock last night, and the verdict was reached at 2 o’clock. Dodson admitted killing Branscomb, but said that he shot in self defense. The two had quarreled over some livestock a short time before the tragedy, which occurred in Branscomb’s field, and this was said to have caused the shooting. 50 YEARS AGO

Oct. 30, 1970 JONESBORO — Governor Rockefelle­r wound up his seven days of stomping Arkansas by jet helicopter Thursday with a seven-stop vote foray into Northeast Arkansas. He visited Walnut Ridge, Pocahontas, Paragould, Piggott, Corning and Truman before concluding the day with an evening rally at the Craighead County Fairground­s here. To about 800 supporters in a tent at the Craighead County fairground­s, Rockefelle­r said spending at Arkansas State University had increased 73 per cent, from $2 to almost $4 million, during his tenure, and he said he had been able to maintain peace both on Arkansas college campuses and in the streets

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Chris Lanford Quinn; his son, Jason Quinn; one brother, Tony (Becky) Quinn; two sisters, Vicki (Howard) Smith, Karen (Chuck) Wisdom; one brother-in-law, Doug (Betty) Lanford; and many nieces and nephews.

Ronnie served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany. He graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He was a retired science teacher and coach for the Pulaski County Special School District.

Services will be held at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery 1501 Maryland Avenue in NLR on Friday, November 6th at 1 p.m.

He was born Nov. 6, 1960, in Clinton, Ark., to the late Cecil Wayne and Carolyn Rose Hall. Henry was a fixer of all things, from cars to fences because there had been “a good many people working together” and there had been understand­ing.

Oct. 30, 1995 SPRINGDALE — Sky divers swooped down Sunday to mark the rebirth of the old Jones Truck Lines terminal as the Harvey and Bernice Jones Center for Families in downtown Springdale. But the crowd had their eyes on Bernice Jones most of the afternoon. Several hundred people attended the “grand premiere” of the family center, and they followed close behind as the 89-yearold benefactor moved from one stage to another to help unveil statues and dedicate various features of the center.

• So many voters have turned out to cast early ballots in Union County that two of the county’s five early voting machines were completely filled by Friday afternoon and had to be shut down. A third machine had space for about 80 more votes on it, and Union County Clerk Shannon Phillips anticipate­d that it would be full and turned off before her office closed for the day. Each machine can hold 1,200 ballots before shutting down, Phillips said. Extra voting cartridges were being sent overnight, and the machines should be back online just after noon today, officials said.

HOT SPRINGS — Jack Presley Melton, 86, of Hot Springs, Ark., went to be with the Lord on October 28, 2020. He was born May 18, 1934, in Mt. Tabor, to his parents, Robert and Nellie Melton. Presley grew up on the family farm working and playing with his dog, Shep. Presley was a lifelong member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, where he was saved and baptized at a young age, eventually becoming a deacon and moderator.

Presley graduated from Hot Springs High and began his career in the business world. He married his sweetheart in 1958. Presley started Melton Excavating in the late 50s, but ventured into logging in the early 60s. He logged for almost 30 years and partnered with Glen Westerman, forming Melton and Westerman Logging until they retired in 1988. Prior to logging, Presley also farmed for several years, owning as high as 100 head of cattle at his peak.

After retiring from Melton and Westerman Logging, Presley formed Melton Excavating, where his son Darius joined him in 1992. He finished his working years in the family business working with his wife, daughterin-law, and finally his grandson and granddaugh­ter, who joined the business this year. Presley was cofounder of 2-M Pumping Service, Inc. and owner of Melton Farms of Mt. Tabor.

Presley loved to hunt and fish and was a member of 88 M Hunting Club and Melton Farms Hunting Club. He had a passion for 4-wheel drive vehicles, especially Jeeps. Mr. Melton also formed at Quartet with his cousin Vell Meredith, their wives, and cousin, Oleta Bright on the piano.

Loving survivors include his wife of 62 years, Eunice Melton of Hot Springs; son, Darius Melton and his wife, Tonya of Hot Springs; grandchild­ren, Colter Melton of Hot Springs, Hanna Mills of Hot Springs; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; sisters-in-law, Arlena Reed, Arleva Hilborn (Jim); and brotherin-law, Harry Speer. Presley was preceded in death by his parents.

Compton; three sons, Ken Compton of Conway, Kevin Compton of Little Rock, and Kris Compton of Ashville, N.C; two granddaugh­ters, Lauren Hum of Conway, and Catie Halac of Longmont, Co.; a brother, Charles Vickers; a sister, Wilma Moore; a sisterin-law, Niva Lancaster of Springfiel­d, Mo.; daughters-in-law, Debra Compton, Dana Compton and Karen Compton; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Born August 26, 1939, in Stone County, Ark., she was a loving and dedicated mother to her sons, and a strong partner to the husband she married at 16 years old. As her sons reached their later teen years, she embarked on an educationa­l career which saw her become an LPN and later a RN, then garnered masters and doctorate honors in the counseling and health science fields. For many years, she had a counseling practice in Little Rock and Morrilton, specializi­ng in helping clients deal with the aging and failing health of family members.

–––––❖––––– EVERETT, Wash. — Stephanie Payne Geckle, age 43, passed away on October 11, 2020, in Everett, Wash., after a long illness with brain cancer. She was born on April 17, 1977, in Shreveport, La., to parents William Gregory Payne and Marilyn Dover Payne. She married Jonathan Geckle on February 22, 2003, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and had four children. Stephanie was a student at the University of Washington, pursuing studies in Early Childhood Education, and she enjoyed volunteeri­ng at Seattle Hill Elementary School. Until her illness, she belonged to the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrato­rs (SCBWI). Stephanie lived in Shreveport, La., until moving to Coral Springs, Fla., where she attended Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School and Broward College. She and her family moved to Little Rock, Ark., where she created a daily Little Rock photo blog before moving to Everett, Wash.

She is survived by devoted husband, Jon; and beloved children, Thomas, age 16, William, age 15, Emily, age 13, and Jonathan (Jack), age 11. She is also survived by mother, Marilyn Dover Newman; and brother, Michael Newman; as well as by parents-in-law, Steven and Carole Geckle; brother-in-law, Greg Geckle; aunt, Martha Dover, and husband John; uncle, Mark Dover; and cousins Julia and Madeline.

Services for Stephanie were performed on October 17, 2020, at Unity Church in Lynnwood, Wash., and she was laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Snohomish, Wash.

Little Rock police arrest- ed two suspects in an Oct. 23 battery incident, according to a police report.

Police responded to a shots-fired call at 5716 Young Road just after 3 p.m. that Friday and contacted at a nearby McDonald’s a person who had a wound in her left shoulder, the report said.

A witness told police that a vehicle stopped in front of him abruptly, and an arm with a handgun stuck out of the vehicle and fired three or four shots into the residence, according to the report. The witness told police the vehicle’s license plate number.
