State police report five deaths in accidents on Arkansas roads

Five people died on Arkansas roadways Sunday and Monday, according to the Arkansas State Police.

A Little Rock man died in a single-vehicle wreck Monday on Interstate 530 near Redfield in Jefferson County, according to an Arkansas State Police preliminar­y report.

Terry Lester Mitchell, 43, was driving a 2005 Acura north at 6:52 a.m. when he drove onto the left shoulder of the interstate while trying to negotiate a curve, the report states. Mitchell over-corrected his steering, causing the vehicle to slide across both lanes of the interstate and into a ditch before crashing into a tree.

Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene.

The weather was clear and the road was dry.

A Pocahontas woman died Monday morning in a head-on collision on U.S. 63 near Sedgwick in Lawrence County, according to a state police preliminar­y report.

Shelby Plumley, 20, was driving south in a Chevrolet sport-utility vehicle at 9:45 a.m. when a northbound 2008 Chevrolet pickup, driven by 51-yearold Marty Champlin of Walnut Ridge, crossed into the southbound lane and struck Plumley’s vehicle head on, killing Plumley, the report states.

The weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the collision.

A 19-year-old woman from Springhill, La., died Sunday morning in a single-vehicle accident 3 miles south of Stamps on Arkansas 53 in Lafayette County, according to state police.

Jennifer Renae Hicks was traveling north at 9:30 a.m. when the 2007 Nissan Sentra she was driving crossed the centerline, traveled along an embankment on the west side of the highway and struck a tree, the report states.

The weather was clear and road conditions were dry.

A 49-year-old Cabot man also died Sunday when the 2007 Nissan Altima he was driving went off the road and crashed into a tree on South Kerr Road in Lonoke, according to a state p0lice report.

William L. Phillips Jr., was westbound when he failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle, the report states. The car skidded off the road to the left and struck a tree before coming to a rest on its side facing westbound, the report states.

Weather and road conditions were not included in the report.

A 51-year-old Siloam Springs man died Sunday and another was injured in a single-vehicle accident about 10 p.m. at the intersecti­on of Jackson Road and Arkansas 244 in Benton County, according to a state police preliminar­y report.

Billy Crittenden and passenger Jimmy Crittenden, 53, were traveling north on Jackson Road at a high rate of speed in a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe and failed to see a stop sign and the end of the roadway, the report states.

The Santa Fe crossed the highway, hit an embankment and flew 50 feet before coming to a stop, according to the report.

Conditions were cloudy and rainy, and the road was wet at the time of the accident.

State police report at least 537 people have died on Arkansas roadways this year.
