DECATUR — Newman Britton of Pine Bluff said Saturday that the National State’s Rights Party will meet today at Decatur (Benton County) to form a movement in east Oklahoma, Northwest Arkansas and South Missouri to oppose school integration. He said he had conducted a meeting at Pine Bluff last Sunday and “the press said we had 25 people there, but we had 50.”

■ Three people suing a Delta community college over discrimination want a federal court to prevent the school from merging with the University of Arkansas. However, Steven Jones, president of the Phillips County Community College in Helena, has recommended the merger. Supporters argue it would reduce costs and make more programs available to students. A state law passed this year offered incentives to schools that merged to reduce administrative costs.

PINE BLUFF — When it rains here, Sixth Avenue and other major thoroughfares resemble small canals. Some lanes are blocked by large pools of water, forcing motorists on affected streets across the centerline to avoid drowning out their cars. Many streets are in dire need of repaving; the Street Department is due for new equipment, as are Fire and Police departments. These and other city improvements will happen if Pine Bluff voters approve a five-eighthsof-a-percent sales-tax initiative and its associated bond projects. The election is on Feb. 8. Officials will announce locations and times for an early-voting period.
