MOREHEAD STATE 69, ARKANSAS STATE 61

Morehead State scored seven of the game’s final nine points to pull away for a victory over Arkansas State University on Sunday afternoon in Morehead, Ky.

Freshman Johni Broome scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Morehead State (1-2), in a game that featured eight ties and 10 lead changes. Julius Dixon put the Eagles up for good, hitting a layup with 6:58 remaining for a 60-58 lead.

Sophomore Caleb Fields matched his career high with 22 points for the Red Wolves (0-2), hitting 6 of 12 from the floor and all 9 of his free-throw attempts.

Christian Willis added 14 points for Arkansas State, and Norchad Omier led the Wolves with six rebounds.

Morehead State held a 43-23 advantage on the boards and took 10 more shots from the floor than Arkansas State. The Eagles were 26-of-56 shooting, including a 16-of-30 effort in the second half. The Red Wolves were 19-of-46 shooting overall and 10 of 20 in the final 20 minutes. The Eagles outscored the Red Wolves 36-20 inside the lane.

Marquis Eaton handed out a team-high four assists for ASU.

Morehead State led 23-21 at the half. Arkansas State led 41-38 with 11:27 remaining.

IOWA STATE 80, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 63

The Golden Lions (0-3) scored the game’s first 10 points and held a 37-34 lead at halftime in Ames, Iowa, but could not keep up with the Cyclones in the second half.

Iowa State (1-0) connected on 19 of 32 shots in the second half to gain control.

Shaun Doss Jr. and Markedric Bell each scored 15 points for the Golden Lions, who managed a 38-34 advantage inside the paint and outrebound­ed the Cyclones 36-31.

Dequan Morris added 14 points for UAPB. Bell and Morris shared game-high rebounding honors with 10 each.

UAPB led 14-2 after Bell’s jumper inside the lane with 15:29 left in the first half.

Iowa State never led in the first half but took the lead for good 44 seconds into the second half on a three-pointer by Tyler Harris. The Cyclones’ lead grew to as many as 20 points (80-60).

Jalen Coleman-Lands paced Iowa State with 17 points while Rasir Bolton added 16.

UAPB was 14 of 27 (51.9%) from the floor in the first half, and finished 25 of 56 (44.6%).
