By working together

-

While our government may be lacking, it is not meant to be the “end all” of financial woes. I do believe instead of sending stimulus money to every American, the government should have been more strategic in how it distributed the funds.

First of all, the stimulus money should have doubled funds to those Americans already receiving SNAP benefits. Secondly, the government should have doubled funds to those already receiving unemployment benefits. In addition, it should have forced banks to waive overdraft fees and other banking fees for unemployed Americans for 12 months. Small businesses, not large corporations, should be given stimulus funds with no stern directives. Business owners are quite capable of knowing how best to use the funds to keep their businesses afloat.

Because stimulus funds are now being placed in the hands of some Americans who truly don’t need it, I propose a call to action. Americans with decent consciences needs to rise up and do the right thing. If you are a working American and not in dire financial need, share your stimulus funds with a local family in need, a relative in need, a neighbor in need, a local food bank, or church who can multiply your gift quickly to help those in need. Maybe there is a church group who can pool stimulus funds together to pay rent for a family for six months.

Now that is how we, as Americans, can get out of this financial crisis—by working together! ANTOINETTE MIMS
