Dr. B shared in his last weeks of life he had been talking with Jesus and doing more “listening than talking.” He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dardanelle. He was a US Army Veteran World War II and Korean War, achieving rank of Captain. He was a Medical Doctor graduating from Universities of Pennsylvania (UG) and Buffalo (MED) becoming an innovative surgeon for 30 years (21 years Millard Henry Clinic Russellville). Before retirement, golf was a silly game chasing a white ball around green grass. After retirement, golf became greatest hobby - playing into late 80’s with friends/family, plus gardening (many azaleas) and avid Razorback fan.

Dr. B was one of the pioneers advocating dangers of tobacco use and founded Cigarettes Anonymous for American Cancer Society 1962 – a behavior modification program to help people stop smoking. His program created national and international interest – was written up in scientific journals plus Life Magazine, Time, Reader’s Digest, and other journals. He toured the United States for the American Cancer Society and presented his slide-illustrated program, “The Tobacco Game” to over 200,000 students (grammar through graduate age students). Governor Huckabee appointed him to the Arkansas Tobacco and Cessation Advisory Committee from 2004 through 2008. Dr. B wrote two books: Breaking the Smoking Habit and Thoughts and Musings of an Arkansas Country Doctor. After retirement, he was a newspaper columnist for many years publishing over 3,000 articles: Aging Arkansas, Atkins Chronicle, The Russellville Courier, The Dardanelle Post Dispatch, and other publications.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. Arrangements are under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made as donations to benefit the numerous staff members who provided outstanding care to Dr. B for many years through “Holiday Fund – Brookdale Russellville” directed to Mindy Brigance; Brookdale Russellville; 240 S.
